If your going to the Holland State Park you won't want to miss this spot for a great view of Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa. Before staring up the stairs, you will want to park in the Black Lake Boardwalk East Parking Lot. This lot is just west of the entrance trail for Mt. Pisgah. Parking in the middle of a summer day may not be easy in this area. Suggestion for the summertime, if you're not camping in the area or staying at a local hotel or B & B, for better parking go early morning or just before sunset (bring a flashlight for after the sun sets). It is a very strenuous hike to the top over 200 stairs, there are areas to rest along the way, but please take this into account before you start up. There is a landing/look out area at the top, stay as long as you would like. Once or twice a year, you may see the Ottawa County Parks Dept. hosting a bird/raptor watch. Feel free to join in the watch and the conversation. It is very educational. We have done this twice. Because the only way to the top is the stairs, there is bike and stroller parking at the bottom of the stairs. In the summer many of the campers and joggers in the area will make a trek to the top. Because of the dune erosion, please, please, please, stay in specially marked areas and off the dunes, as temping as it may be. Dunes are a fragile eco system in Holland, please observe this. There is a trail near the top, you can take, once again, please stay on the trail. If you want to play in the sand, head to the beach via the road or the trail. If you want to run down a dune, head to Silver Lake State Park about 2 hours north.
I make the strenuous walk up every chance I get. It is so rare to get a panoramic view like this in Michigan, there just usually isn't that much elevation change. Mount Pisgah is a wonderful exception. The view of the pier and Lake Michigan in one direction, with Lake Mac in the other is a site to behold.
Lots of steps, but well worth it. A great view of Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa. (Big Red Lighthouse too). I will take all able bodied visitors for this view. There are, I repeat, A LOT of steps.
It's a little difficult to find at first, but worth the time and the climb. Great views of Big Red, Lake Michigan, and Lake Macatawa.
203 steps to the first platform and great views of the lakes. Not a lot of parking, so you may have to walk a little bit to get there - but definitely worth it.
While there are quite a few stairs, therefore not handicap accessible, the view is worth it once you get to the top. The neat thing is you can go different seasons and get a whole new view each time. You see Lake Michigan, Lake Macatawa and the surrounding areas. Lots of well marked trails through the dunes as well. Well worth the energy to climb the stairs just for the view.
My husband and i made the climb up this past weekend. The fall colors are on full display. So glad that we took time out of our short getaway to see/find this place. I will be honest we had a hard time locating it. We had to laugh at ourselves once we were set on the right path. We parked in the designated parking area, then turned out the wrong way, and headed on our walk. Realizing after 10 minutes that we should turn around. But even so the scenery there is beautiful. Ok so, we went somewhat early so it was a nice and quiet visit/hike. It is a neat thing to do if you're in Holland. Peaceful and beautiful. Worth taking on all the steps and once up there you can branch off on the hiking trails. It's a good time. I plan on going again in the spring w/ my kids.
You must make the walk up these 200+ steps to look over Holland and the lake and dunes. Not for people who are not able to climb, but several landings with benches on way up to rest and take photos.
Totally worth the "hike" - the views are beautiful. If your worried about the trip "up" - just take your time. Bring water and your camera! A must see for visitors and locals. A quick reminder of the beauty of Lake Michigan and the surrounding area.
If you're in for a little excessive and want to see a great view, take a hike to the top of mt. Piegan. You can see both Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa. A must see if you take a trip out to Holland State Park.
Beautiful view - wondered whether the 239 steps to top would be worth it (and doable) and it most definitely was worth it. The climb was made easier by the stair design and the rest spots along the way. Recommended.
Breathtaking view. Great excersize doing the 230 steps to the top. Take your camera. Several hiking trails also exist
Beautiful view from the top and a very well-constructed staircase with plenty of rest areas make this a must-do stop in Holland. Parking is on the lake side about 1000 feet past the actual trailhead, and the fact that you have to walk past The General Store for Ice Cream after climbing to the top and back makes this trek worthwhile for anybody. After climbing to the top, there are many well marked side trails that deliver a pleasant hike through the woods, but hiking shoes are recommended as some parts of the trails are steep and can be slippery.
Great workout buy climbing the stairs to the top. than the view is awsome. Always the place to see lake michigan.
Nice break especially if you've been in the car sitting for awhile. A little difficult to find, entrance to stairs very near Dunes Dogs on Ottawa beach road. Large sign with info about Mount Pisgah and Ottawa Beach area out front but still could be easily missed. Parking and porta potty lot is located between the General Store and the Coast Guard station on the opposite side if the road from the stairs. One item to note no dogs are allowed on the stairs or walkways. We were here in summer but imagine it is beautiful in fall colors and winter as well. Great view of the big red house against a white back ground should be beautiful.
