The Thomas Edison Depot Museum on the St Clair River is an easy and educational opportunity for all ages. The staff is very conversant of the history of the Edison family in Port Huron, and some had worked on the original restoration of the Depot when they found telegraph messages stuffed in the walls for insulation. Situated on the banks of the St. Clair River under the Blue Water Bridges, the Depot location is also a wonderful place to watch the passing of great lakes freighters up-bound into Lake Huron, and down-bound from the lake under the bridges then making that sharp left turn to follow the river. Most passing freighters are only 200 feet away from the shore. With plentiful parking, a modest admission and a self guided tour of wonderful dioramas, this is a “Do Not Miss”.
If you really want to get a feeling for the life of Thomas Edison this is a place you must stop along with his birthday in Ohio.
Really just a small building and a restored rail sar Edison had rode onas a boy .Worth the look .Very well put together ,a genuine piece of Americana .!
A minor charge for museum admission, but gift shop and rail car are available for viewing free of charge. Several panels with interesting facts and information about Thomas Edison are also available outside the museum.
This is a nice little museum and does not take long to walk through. It gives a nice look into Edison’s life the early years. I learned a few things I did not know and the exhibits are done up well. The Bluewater bridge to Canada is just to the outside and has a nice walking path under the bridge and give you some nice photo opts of the area.
Adjacent to the museum is a bike rental. Don't miss renting a peddle-power surrey for your family to bike around town. It looks like an old fashioned covered surrey which can seat quite a few people and up to four people can peddle at the same time. Totally worth the price for rental The museum was okay.
i have lived in port huron for 13 years and i have seen many tourist waste there money going into this place, it's a little house surrounded by windows you can see everything in there without paying to go in, but if you want to see it up close it is pritty cool.
this museum is located right by the bluewater bridge to canada from the u.s. There is a railroad car from the 19 th century which is part of it and sparked our interest. The railroad car was somewhat of a disappointment as most of the seating had been replaced with tables for a classroom which is currently using it. There was so much potential in recreating this that was lost. The museum was ok, all about thomas edison of course. Some of the hands-on exhibits were not operable during our visit . All in all, an okay tour, but could certainly be better.
This little museum can be quickly toured; it does provide an excellent view into Thomas Edison's early life. The exhibits are done very well, and the short movie about Edison, with him narrating, is nicely done. The young man at the ticket booth was very uninformative, and didn't explain ticket pricing at all; we later found out we could purchase tickets for the 4 museums much cheaper as a group ticket, instead of independently, as we did for 2 of the museums. If you are interested in history, Thomas Edison, or the RR, this museum should be on your list. If not, I'd skip it. $7/adult.
We chose Port Huron as a midway rest stop on our way from Toronto ONT to Holland MI. It was just a place on the map that was convenient. But, we found it a great place to visit. Since we had a few hours to rest before we continued our visit, we drove to the water front (without any particular destination in mind) and visited the Edison Museum. It is affiliated with a few other museums in town. But, this is the only one we visited. It was fun to learn about "Al's" childhood. The museum has many displays about some of the moments he spent in Port Huron and on the rails. It details how his days in this city contributed to the man he became. After visiting the museum, the walkway along the waterfront offers a relaxing way to spend some time. I don't know if all of Port Huron is this way, but it is very quiet and relaxing along the waterfront nearest to this museum. ------
