This is the best deal in Saginaw! For only $1.00 for adults and $.50 for children they have very well done local history exhibits. Don't let the price fool you! This is a top-notch museum. Everything is very well done and the exhibits change frequently. I visit often and I always have a great experience! Check out their website for a list of exhibits at castlemuseum.org.
Not much ever happened in Saginaw, Michigan, right? WRONG. The Castle Museum beautifully displays and explains the amazing history of the city which played host to remarkable industrial booms in the 19th (lumber) and 20th centuries (auto). The museum can be viewed in about two hours and there's something for all ages. For $1 admission, the Castle Museum is a no-brainer. Five stars.
Before I had gone to this museum, I knew it was a post office. What I didn't know was this museum also had detail information about Saginaw.I am glad that I have been there.
Always being updated with interesting exhibits relevant to local history. Fascinating conversion of a former federal post office building
Check their website for all of the types of exhibits - too many and varied to list here. Be forewarned that the lower level is a paradise for model train enthusiasts.Entrance is $1 for adults; that hardly qualifies as a fee. Parking was readily available on the street.
Amazing architecture for a government building. The section on trains was excellent, and the curator of the trains was highly knowledgeable and gladly shared his time with you.
Visited this museum today and was not sure what to expect, but it turned out to be great. There are numerous exhibits covering Saginaw's history from prehistory to the growth of the auto industry, and it is very well done and informative. Staff was friendly, and it cost $1 to get in. I think I took around an hour to see everything, and will be going back again.
We saw they had a model train display which is the one thug that my boys (4&7) always want to see. They had so much more. We lucked out that there was also a Lego display of the surrounding towns there too. Very cool! The local history displayed was very interesting. Overall everything was well presented. A very inexpensive outing. They really should charge more.
Great Place & great price everyone was friendly and was great at giving information on everything in the muesum
The entry fee was so small it was next to nothing, to see this amazing building from inside. There are lots of different displays considering the museum's size - it used to be the Post Office, so the safe room and environs were intact, there was a large model railway in the basement, reconstructed shops, a tribute to the twin towers of 9/11, and a display of Lego model local towns with a continuous repeating cartoon explaining the development of Lego, which was excellent. Plus more! Definitely worth a trip to see it, and for so little to get in, a bargain !
Housed in the old post office built like a sandstone castle, a history of Saginaw is presented. From the relics of the past, it former times when lumber was big, to its industry that supported General Motors in engine castings and transmissions and gears. The life size diorama gives you a peek at the old shops on its once prosperous main street. Down in the basement, a railroad modelers dream with running trains making their rounds through villages, towns and countryside that would keep a child occupied for some time.
This place is awesome!! As the reviewers said below you get a lot of value going to this place, the admission is low but the experience is way up there. The old building is neat to see inside and out offering a lot of history throughout the building. All of the displays are done professionally and really offer an opportunity to the visitor to learn something in a fun way. When we were there they had a large HO scale train layout in the basement that was really nice to see. The person running the train was willing to share some ideas of what it takes to build up something like this display.Take the kids or just you and your other as I did. I think it is well worth the trip!
If you want to entertain your children or grandchildren on the cheap the cost will surprise you $1 for adults and $.50 for children and for that you get a visual history lesson of Saginaw with many hands on exhibits. take in the railroad museum downstairs. takes 1 to 2 hours.
If you want to know the history of Saginaw, Michigan then the "Castle" is where to go. The museum is located in the "Old Post Office" and throughout your self guided tour you will find interesting exhibits of Saginaw's glory years. Admission is very low, I recommend adding a donation to help support this great museum.
We drove to the Castle Museum and although we did not enter, we drove around the entire building admiring the architecture. It is a beautiful stone building that appears taken care of, with it's spires and turret areas. On one side we saw a sign saying it was a museum, another sign said it was a post office, another was something like a community center area and another a church. It is downtown but in a pretty quiet area where it would be easy to park. I enjoy architecture and this made for some pretty photo opportunities.
