I found this gem on late notice and did the quick stay and play.I can tell you that this course is great shape, friendly staff, And 16, 17, & 18 are some of the best 3 closing holes in golf!I say go go go baby go!I will be back!
If I knew how I would delete my previous review. Andy Mears is no longer running Island hills. The owner has made many changes. First the price is much higher. Second you can't just rent a room anymore you have to rent the whole Villa (four rooms min.) for 2 nights min. for about $1,000 a night. The owner says he is "trying to grow the game of golf". Bulls--t!! Andy was growing the game of golf and he fired him. Talk to some of them members if there are any left. The pricing page he emailed me even has the audacity to say "Affordable Golf at Island Hills Golf Club" at the top of the page. Would recommend going to Battle Creek and staying at either Yarrow (same course designer) or Gull Lake View where you can choose from 5 championship courses. Both have great stay and play packages that are very affordable and the regular price of their courses are much more reasonable. And there is a lot of options for things to do after golf.
They have brand new cottages nestled between the 17th green (elevated par 3 over a marshy area) and 18th green that are nothing short of excellent! You can purchase just a room or include the living space. I highly recommend paying the extra $36 a night for the living space. You can bring all your own food to cook on the gas grill provided. Will need to bring your own grill utensils and brush but everything else you will need is there. Or you can get some great food at the Tavern Grill on site. And with a dishwasher and washer/dryer you can come for an extened stay. I stayed for 3 nights (Sun.-Tues.) and would have been happy staying the rest of the week had my schedule permitted. As nice as the cottages are the gem of this place is the golf course itself. You will not be dissapointed, at twice the price would still be a deal for this beautifull golf course.
As others have stated this place is somewhat isolated. Nearest large town is Kalamazoo which is about a 30 minute trip. My foursome stayed at the new cottages. Kuerig Coffeemakers, flat screen tvs in each bedroom, individual showers in each bedroom, a huge gas stone fireplace in the great room, well equipped kitchen that includes industrial ice machine, microwave, stove, fridge, all glassware and utensils. The golf was fantastic. The course is picturesque with some elevation changes. Combination of both tree lined fairways and links style holes along with some water holes. The staff was fantastic. Andy Mears, the general manager, greeted us, showed us to our rooms and just made us feel like he was happy we were there. Our very first contact was a young man named Garrett who was very informative and well versed on their "stay and play" packages. Our stay went off without any glitches. If I could change anything about Island Hills it would be the restaurant. The food was OK for the price. Personally I would like to see some upgraded quality on the dinner menu. Also the staff in the restaurant had been told not to allow substitutions with their various dishes. One member of our party requested potatoes instead of rice with their entree, we were politely told, "no substitutions". Come on people, how about a little bit of flexibilityl?Overall I rate this as an excellent place to stay and to golf.
I recently stay here in their new cottages and I can't say nothing, but fabulous place. The new cottages have every amenity you might need. The staff is great and is very helpful. We cant say anything, but nice things about everyone. The golf course is beautiful and very well maintained. You will not regret staying and playing here.
Great course was extremely well manicured. Greens-keeper was an assistant at Medina and it shows. Clubhouse has a very nice grill as well with great food. Don't pass it up if you are in the area.
Very well put together course. Very nice layout. Pretty tough. Some tricky water hazzards. I'm a fan of the place. Look for coupons.
