Great museum and treasure in downtown Lansing. Please watch this 90 second spot I created with a few fellow students from Michigan State to get a better picture of the R.E. Olds Museum!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgR3EMvYYkY
My visit to REO museum was like traveling in a time machine. Imagine that ,at the same time you can see a collection of beautiful cars of all eras, you can talk with the people that made them. Real people with real feelings about the proud of a perfect well done job. Don't miss this rare opportunity If you like people, cars and America. not necessarily in this order.Alexandre Freddi
Don't miss this! More than just cars... Lots of history, personal artifacts, and of course, cars in all their glory... I had a 1958 Olds 98 in college... I had to go! seeing. Starts off with R. E. Olds personal items and some of his history. There are early engines, racing engines, automation ideas, and even some parts of factories. If you are a "Lansing-ite" you enjoy how it ties into different parts of Lansing.
Really interesting Museum. Easy to reach the place.Inside there is lot to learning about the History of Automobile, and the history of technology.I really liked to see models of cars that I never seen before. Like V88 Rocket at Nascar in 1953. Or REO Model of 1911.
Several historic pieces and many fascinating pieces of Olds, GM, and Lansing industry history. The location is perfect, just off the lansing river walk and near a park. Parking is very close to the building and free. Once inside you are walking a building that is older than most of the cars you are seeing. Starting off with some of R. E. Olds personal items and some short stories about his history. Then off to some of his earliest engines that made life easier for the owner. The early automation was made possible by these machines. Moving along you can see some of the first productions of R. E. O. and the progression through time. What really sets this auto museum aside from the rest is the history of Lansing throughout. Each section shows where it was produced and you get a feeling of how important and intertwined the auto industry was to Lansing. You can see pieces from old factories, decorations from the Oldsmobile board room, concept engines for racing, and other things that were made in Lansing to further the War efforts. Many great things to say but it's better if you just stop in and spend a few hours learning a little more about Olds, Lansing, and see some amazing cars!
My husband loves cars so we had the afternoon with nothing to do so we went to this Oldsmobile Car Museum. I liked it but my husband really liked it. It was very big but that's okay. I probably wouldn't go again but if you have a car enthusiast they would love this museum.
We spent about 1 1/2 hours reviewing the R.E. Olds' personal artifacts and the cars built in Lansing from the late 1880's. Both were interesting for me the history buff and my husband the car nut. Take the time to read the displays that describe how Mr. Olds made the transition from an engine manufacturer the head of a company designing, manufacturing and marketing automobiles. There are many restaurants near the museum. If you consider this museum, you will also like the Sloan Museum in Flint, the Gilmore Car Museum near battle Creek / Kalamazoo and the Henry Ford in Dearborn.
Obviously, this is a must if you love cars. If you find yourself anywhere near Lansing, Michigan you should really check this place out. It is not an overwhelmingly huge museum, but it does have some really nice examples of Olds vehicles from almost every era. They also have some surprisingly interesting exhibits of furniture and other belongings from the Olds family on display. Definitely worth the time and money.
A very interesting museum. I visited with my husband and brother, who are both very into this kind of thing. I'm not a huge car person, but I still enjoyed myself. The museum is a lot bigger then it appears from the outside. We probably spent an hour and a half looking through it, and the price of admission is very low. Would definitely recommend for a car enthusiast.
We weren't sure what to expect but were in the area and decided to check it out. They had a good amount of vehicles on display and some memorable. You don't need more than an hour to view everything.
a lot of great Olds cars, engines, machines, etc. not an overwhelming museum, just the right size. You could spend and hour here or several hours.
Much larger than it appears. Lots of cars and history here. Especially loved the old brick building that housed the museum and all the artifacts from the Olds factory. The staff was very friendly too. I would recommend this stop if you are in or near the area.
I grew up in an Olds family with my Dad being a Service Manager for many years, and my first car was a '64 Jetstar I. Great car! This museum is sooooo close to being an above average destination for Olds aficionados. There are many cars available for viewing but the descriptions, and other information is poorly displayed. I would have loved a book retrospective, poster or some other type of commemorative item while visiting, but the gift shop is lacking in this area. I hope someone 'grants' a gift of some type to improve the museum experience.
First of all, I must admit I'm not much of a car/mechanical person other than to admire how "pretty" some of them are. I visited this museum as a venue for a wedding reception. (which was such an AMAZING idea) When I arrived down the winding one way street, my first thought was how tiny this place was. But upon entering I discovered it has hidden depths. There are multiple rooms and as you explore it will take you back in time from front to back. You will find more than cars here: early lawnmowers, engines and other transportation paraphernalia. The largest impression I left the museum with, is the idea that once the car was so much more a work of art. Today's modern vehicle has discarded much of the beauty for functionality, and I would suppose for frugalities sake. As I am admittedly not a car person, I'm sure there are expensive modern cars that would impress me with their curves and shininess, but I still do not believe they can match what once was. The attention to detail, with the hood ornaments, decals and other sparkling additions I have no name for, made me fall a little bit in love with them and wish to violate the 'Do Not Touch' signs attached to each vehicle. I would highly recommend this museum to anyone who loves history, art and of course cars. It is well organized with a great flow. There is a nice little gift shop and restrooms. I would mention that there are a few places where the concrete is uneven. Beware if you are brining older visitors who have uneven gaits. And small children will definitely want to ignore the no touch signs even more than I did.
Great Museum!! Great Price!!! Good look at oldsmobile in its Hay day. Friendly Staff!! Not anything to dislike.
