There is a lot to recreate yourself. Food joints are lovely..have all variety of cuisine. Must see state theatre on. Liked shopping too on some artistic shops.
Museums, restaurants, clothing stores, pinball Pete, movie theater, student union, coffee houses, you name it you will find it on State Street! Lots of street parking and lots of student roaming the street. Amazing!
some solid independent and chain restaurants catering to students and faculty at the U of Michigan.Ashley's has a nice Beer list and has been around for a while.I would check out the Arcade also for old-school shopping...been around for 100+ years...
I graduated from U of M in the late seventies, and State Street has always been a great place to shop and eat. It has IMPROVED so much in the past 10 years. Even though Borders, the Hallmark store, the camera shop, and Jacobson's department store have left; so many improvements have been added. We love eating at the Red Hawk and also enjoy having a quick sandwich at Potbelly's.I like the Michigan sports shops across the street as well. There is a a couple of new drug stores which would be wonderful for the students. The area is very nice for the close to campus shopping needs. For more boutique shopping, head over to Main Street that is lined with great restaurants as well.
In response to comments by other reviewers who have mentioned that pedestrians seem to cross the street haphazardly almost causing accidents, drivers NEED to be aware of A2's very unusual and crazy crosswalk law.Ann Arbor’s crosswalk law has been a point of controversy since it was introduced in 2012. The city's pedestrian crosswalk ordinance requires vehicles to stop for pedestrians STANDING at the curb of a crosswalk. This is different than the Michigan Uniform Traffic Code requirement of yielding the right of way to pedestrians who are within a crosswalk. It requires some kind of telepathy...is that ped just standing there yapping on their cell phone or are they about to cross the street? As long as this ordinance is on the books, I am giving every street in A2 one star. I have to drive and work to Ann Arbor every day...it is a terrible law and I have no idea how any out-of-towner driver could possibly contemplate their responsibility under this law.
Its very nice to walk up and down state st lots of shops,u of m campus and when the art fair is in town it will blow you away.
We spent a Saturday afternoon strolling around on State Street to get a feel of the area around the university. So many interesting shops and places to eat. Would have liked to have more time for exploring and eating though. Will definitely go there if I ever find myself in Ann Arbor again.
great street to wander along. mostly local shops though some chains are moving in. lots of places to eat. you can walk down state street along the university passing lecture halls, the michigan union, etc.
A small town street in a big university. Shops to meet the needs of the students. They have a theater and some restaurants.
and the street & ART FAIRS ARE NOT TO MISS!.Parking is crowded but available if you can walk a few blocks and warm us with a cappachino once you get there!
A visit to the city is incomplete unless you drive through this street .Though the parking is not easy to find , its worthwhile to stop nearby for Lunch/ brunch / snack in the near by restaurant. We can also see the down town buildings , nearby.
Fun, busy street along west side of campus. Lots of things students need including bookstore and coffee shops. Wish city would require new chain stores like drugstores keep old historic fronts. In only 5 years CVS, Wallgreens and Starbucks have popped up
State street is great for shopping, eating & people watching. There are many food options from $-$$$ (if you're looking for $$$$ head to Main St), and you'll find cute shops as well. I'd say Main street has more options for shopping, but State Street isn't too bad with Pitaya, Urban Outfitters, and tons of places to get UM gear. It's great for ice cream & a stroll on a sunny day!
We have spent many afternoons and evenings strolling State and the neighborhood. There are places to appeal to all ages, but especially to students and their visiting parents. We especially like the wide choices in restaurants and Encore Records.
Enjoyed all of the different restaurants/bars in the area as well as shops! Many blocks nearby that had things to do also.
