We sampled the Gandy Dancer at a local restaurant, then vowed to find the meadery to learn more about the business, mead, and Leaky Roof. In January 2015, when wind and weather make being on the Lake of the Ozarks an event for only the hardiest of folk, we drove about one hour to Buffalo, MO where Leaky Roof is located. The man behind the bar, Jhett, is one of three on-site partners, and he's the one responsible for customer/public relations. He pours the mead for an 8-flavor tasting and explains the process. Leaky Roof uses an organic South American wildflower as its core ingredient. After fermenting the appropriate amount of time, a bit of carbonation is added to deliver a refreshing beverage. Most meads produced contain 6.5% alcohol, but two, aged longer, deliver 10% and 12%. Even at 6.5%, drinkers should beware. The tasting is eight beverages at 3 ounces each for $8, and because Leaky Roof's mead is so refreshing and clean, anyone could be tempted to drink more and quickly. Others who came to the tap room while we were there were companionable and pleasant. I suspect this has to do with the local nature of the business and with the people who find mead intriguing, but I can assert that you will enjoy your time there. We took home the Gandy Dancer in a refillable jug.
