We went as a family of 3 adults and the sweet was absolutely a sweet heart and drive up to defiance gives a beautiful view. a must do if you are in the area and some time on hand. Do check out Boone's homestead as well . The sampling charges are not sky rocket , we paid 3 USD for sampling 3 and a free glass as keepsake .
We were at Sugar Creek on Saturday after Thanksgiving on a 74 degree day. They have a lot of outdoor seating and the views are lovely. The main house is 2 stories and very cramped. They have several rooms which are nicely appointed but are very small; you're better off being outdoors on the deck or patio if you have a group of any size. The tasting room is VERY small and the bar is as well. The outdoor tables and chairs are all green plastic with faux wood contact paper on top and I was surprised at the cheap feel, which was a contradiction to the rest of the property. If you are doing a large gathering, bring table cloths because the outdoor area is lovely, despite the tables and chairs being cheap plastic.Their tastings are the smallest pour I've ever seen, which I guess is the result of you being allowed to take the wine glass home with you. This place is unusual and very interesting, with a unique charm that you should experience first hand. I would go back and enjoy the outdoor areas, weather permitting.Enjoy! Jilbere
We spent a really nice afternoon at Sugar Creek Winery enjoying the view of the river valley while sipping on their truly delicious Vidal Blanc and Chambourcin wines. The staff are so friendly and make you feel glad you came. They are so helpful at assisting you in wine selections. While they don't serve food, we did take advantage of the sausage & cheese they sell in the tasting/retail area. They had live music under a gazebo and later that evening were featuring a large locally-known band under their pavilion. We liked it so much there that we stayed for the evening band. They had a food stand set up not far away from the pavilion, so we ended up having dinner there and dancing all night to great music. They have a winning combination here: good wine, nice staff, beautiful view, and an afternoon of music -- all for an affordable price. It doesn't get much better than this!
This was my 3rd time at this winery. What I like most about this place is they have lots of shade since it always hot in the summer when we go there. I also really like the fact that they allow you to bring in food. Beware: not all wineries around Defiance / August allow you to bring in food! You cannot bring in beverages of any kind - water included.I am not a wine connoisseur so I am not going to attempt to make an comments on the wine good or bad. I know they have a lot of sweet tasting wines and they also have beer and non-alcoholic beverages. The view is very nice since you are up on a hill. There is plenty of parking and the place is big enough for a nice atmosphere but small enough so it is not overwhelming with masses of people. You pay $3 for a tasting glass and get to taste 3 wines. Unless there is a special event there is no cover charge..I will return next year.....
wonderful wine, nice view, friendly employees. The only thing they really need is food, then it would be a really great place
Sorry for the late review... I visited Sugar Creek with a Bachelorette Party in September 2013, and we had a fabulous time. We were able to bring in our own food, which was great, as opposed to most of the wineries in the area that charge $10 for a small Panini, haha. They had a great table reserved for us as soon as we arrived due to our reservation, the band was great, and (by no fault of the winery but oh well) the weather was PERFECT. All around fantastic experience, will recommend to anyone.
Beautiful Fall Weather, Beautiful Fall Colors, Delicious Fall Wines! Great scenery, fun live music, and Fall crispness settle in to another festive fall season and another vintage for the record books. As with most, but not all, Missouri Wine Valley vintages, Sugar Creek rarely disappoints. A great weekend getaway for an hour or an afternoon. Reds, Whites, Blushes, and the dessert port (even of you don't think you like Ports) are a real treat. A must-stop place when traipsing the great Hwy 94 wine trail.
Sugar Creek was the first winery I had ever been to in Defiance, MO, and I was very pleased with the entire experience. The wine was excellent and the views were spectacular. I'd really like to stop here again for another taste and try the food.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a place in Missouri wine country with better wine, nicer people and prettier views. All these things combined make for a wonderful afternoon.Live music and a wood-fired pizza oven add to the enjoyment! There is ample seating in a variety of place - outside under an umbrella or canopy, on the covered porch, or on a blanket in the grass. The surrounding vineyards are nice to look at.The Cynthiana is a must-try for those who like a meaty, tasty red.
Enjoyed a quick tasting after huffing it up from the Katy trail (steep driveway!). It was a rainy day, so we were the only ones there. Offered us tasting which was nice but not much character. Loved walking the grounds. Would definitely go back!
This is a small, quaint winery with very scenic grounds. Their tasting and retail sales area is very small and we did feel rushed during our tasting. We were able to buy a bottle of wine and took it outdoors to their seating area. They did have ample seating outside to go along with some seating areas indoors. The outdoor seating was nice as there were many tables and some gazebo areas. If they could figure out a traffic flow through their retail area, it would be a more enjoyable experience for customers. Their wines were very good, however.
wonderful winery........fun place to visit all the time. Great tasting and lots of places to sit outside. Sometimes there is music and the wine is really good. Can bring a picnic.
Have been to Sugar Creek many times. We have always had a great time there enjoying their beautiful property and great wines...not to mention being able to bring all of your own food and getting to listen to live music. Now the reason why they don't allow any type of beverage including water is because people were putting alcohol in the water bottles to make their own drinks. So I don't fault them there. Those with negative reviews are entitled to their opinion, but the place deserves a try and you won't be disappointed. They are even open in the winter...we had our baby shower there and had the whole place to ourselves.
Used to be a very small, plain winery with nice people but little else to offer. They have really expanded and worked on providing a much better atmosphere with more to offer. Still not as good as Montelle, but definitely an improved winery.
This winery has great lunches at a cheap price. They have a great location and staff. But the worst part about this winery are the wine glasses. When you are doing their free wine tasting beware that they will give you a dirty wine glasses with lipstick stains 9 out of 10 times. Every time I refuse it and ask for another glass or a plastic cup. The staff dont seem to notice when they give it to you dirty. They need to pay more attention because it is nasty and a huge turn off!
