The Museum is set in a lovely state park on the river and with nice hiking and camping facilities., the birthplace is a two room cabin situated inside the museum. There are a surprising number of Twain artifacts, including his carriage and some furniture from his Connecticut home. The cabin is furnished with pieces from the period. There are exhibits on the family tree and family members including his only daughter who lived beyond her 20's, Clara. Clara played a large part in designing the museum before her death in the 1960's. We also enjoyed seeing first editions and manuscripts as well as copies of his books in numerous languages. This museum is small with a friendly staff and nice displays. No admission, but donations are taken.

This shrine/museum is built around the "birthplace cabin" there is quite a bit to see here but really doesn't take long to go through. There are also souvenirs available here from the state park.

Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known as Mark Twain, is the famous literary icon and humorist, renowned for such books as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He was born in a log cabin that is housed in the museum at this state park just outside of Florida, MO where the home was originally located. (It wasn't until he was 4 that the family moved closer to Hannibal, MO.) He would become so famous that he was friends with presidents, industrialists and European royalty. His books have been translated into 75 languages! This museum is very cute and free asking only goodwill donations. If you love his humor and literature, it is a stop not to be missed! The website is: http://www.mostateparks.com/map/mark-twain-birthplace-state-historic-site

Mark Twain's birthplace is preserved inside a museum at the Mark Twain Birthplace State Historic Site located near Florida, MO near Mark Twain State Park. There is no cost for admission. The museum is full of artifacts from Mark Twain's past including furniture, clothing, the home of his birth, and tools which were used during that time period. It is really a fun place to visit where history comes to life.

This museum is very small, with only two rooms. One of the rooms has Mark Twain's actual birth home inside; and the other is a museum with a 24 minute video about him. The cabin is furnished with items from that time period, and there are some furnishings from his house in Connecticut. It's a cool, informative little museum you should check out. There wasn't a fee for the museum, only donations.

This place was fantastic. The museum has many neat artifacts from Mark Twain's writing career, including original manuscripts and contracts. Unfortunately you can't take photos, even though everything is protected in display cases. The house he was born is features period-piece furniture, and the displays around the outside of the house demonstrate what life was like in the 1800's: spinning wheels and looms, etc. The grounds outside the museum are very peaceful and relaxing. Take the time to walk the trails and wander down by the lake.

I have visited this small museum at least twice. I knew Mark Twain novels were impactful and shaped American literature, but I had forgotten the extent of the impact. This museum will help you understand. The museum includes the house of the Clemens family and it walks you through stages of Clemens' life and literature. Lots of artifacts, items from the Clemens home, photos, letters, etc. ans samples of Clemens' work and samples of original graphics. Worth the trip and the area is beautiful, so you will have the opportunity to have a picnic lunch and maybe do dome hiking. Florida Missouri is tiny with maybe 3 homes and no downtown.

We enjoyed our visit to this site, a little out of the way but worth the drive. It is actually in Florida Missouri.

It is an awsome place where one can find the true history of Mark Twain. You'll learn where he picked up his famous pen name and what it means to river boat captains. The only down side if there is one is that it could use a facelift. Definately a must see if you are nearby.

A small town, with a huge personality, it is easy to understand the river life and rural life coming together to give Sam ideas to use in his writings. Coming from this part of the U.S. it is easy to see how parents value their children and how we mourn when we lose them.

My husband and I were staying the night at a nearby B&B and wanted to check the museum out. We both enjoyed the short film about the life of Mark Twain and the many artifacts they have on display, including the actual home he was born in. They have many photos of him and his family as well as numerous quotes given by this quick-witted man. If your in the area we recommend stopping by.

There's not much left in Florida, MO. You'll find the remnants of a once larger town and a memorial marking where Mark Twain was born. The actual house has been moved to the state historic site and museum. There is a small fee for the museum, which contains the house and some exhibits about Mark Twain. There's also a short documentary about the author. It's a very small but well maintained museum. The woman working the front desk was very pleasant and helpful.
