A Mark Twain portrayer (can't remember his name) gave a lecture as Mark Twain would have done. What was most interesting was the conversation before the lecture with the visitor's. It was like talking to Mark Twain himself. Go early and visit and have tea and treats...included with the price.
Definitely need to consider putting this on your Hannibal agenda. There's not much to do after 5pm, but this is one thing you can do. "Mark Twain" will mingle with you beforehand and regale you with wit, wisdom and humor all through the show.
We thoroughly enjoyed Richard Garey as "Mark Twain Himself" The wit and humor of Mark Twain makes you feel that Samuel Clemens is there in the room himself. This was a terrific experience and the ultimate highlight of our trip to Hannibal.
Richard Garey does an awesome job as Mark Twain. A very enjoyable show.Different every time. Garey also does a "Must See" performance of with A Shepherds Tale at Christmas time. It is eye-opening and deepens your appreciation of the reason for the season. The theater itself isquaint and intimate. Lots of parking outside. I love the location in the center of the Mark Twain Boyhood Home Historic District. Lots of good shopping & eating within a couple blocks.
Saw Mark Twain actor----wonderful experience. I thought I was seeing and hearing Mark Twain himself!!!
First off, I should say that I'm not really a Mark Twain fan, but I thought this would be an appropriate thing to do while in Hannibal, so we went. The theater is cozy, and tea and cookies are included in the price. The actor visits with the audience in the "tea room" area before the show. He is in character all the time, and is quite knowledgeable. We didn't find the show itself to be very entertaining (though it had its moments), but that could just be (as I said) that we are not big Twain fans. Others seem to like the show.
My son and I went to see "Mark Twain" at the Planters Barn Theater. The man who was Mark Twain (can't remember his name) did an outstanding job! The atmosphere was of the theater was so cozy and inviting and we felt like we were truly watching Mark Twain.
Mark Twain really lives !!! This show was so awesome. Mr. Garey lives and breathes Samuel Clemens !! He kept character through out the entie time he was in the theater and even when we saw him at the museum - he WAS Mark Twain !! This was by far an even better experience than we expected. The ambiance of the theater, the welcoming staff, and Victorian tea with treats! Earlier in thr day we had been to the Planter's Barn for "olde time" photo shoot -That too was such fun. The proprietors were welcoming, helpful, flexible and delightful to work with.
I felt compelled to inform the public about the true nature of the Mark Twain HIMSELF show, after reading the review below. Apparently the reviewer is unfamiliar with All that is Twain. Twain cannot be compared to the likes of Larry the Cable Guy, or Robin Williams. So to those who enjoy and understand Twain, this is a wonderful show, and you WILL be entertained. We have seen Mr Garey's portrayal of Sam Clemens numerous times, both at the Planter's Barn and in various other venues. We've never been disappointed. Our last visit to the theater was in May 2011. To those who have been dragged kicking and screaming into the theater, we can only hope that you will be roused from your disappointment by Twain's wit, or at the least, will find rest and recuperation during your self imposed unconsciousness in the back row. Of course Twain would appreciate sleeping hecklers, but don't sell him short. I'd also offer a wager that Twain would have an appropriate response, if the hecklers would maintain their consciousness, making them able to heckle. The reviewer's profile photo includes a statement which says a lot. "Haters Gonna Hate". You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time. So don't be fooled by this exception to the rule.
My wife and I were made welcome from the first moment we stepped inside the theater, a converted livery barn full of period decor and charm. Complimentary refreshments were available, and although the venue isn't huge by any means, it is nicely arranged. One part of the charm was the use of period theater seats in front of the low stage. On this occasion we saw a superb performance by actor Richard Garey as "Mark Twain" giving a wonderful recitation of anecdotes taken directly from the great man's life and writings. All in all, heartily recommended!
One thing Twain enthusiasts should definitely do while in Hannibal, is see the Mark Twain Himself show in the Planter's Barn Theater. The actor is a very talented man who will entertain you with words "from the horse's mouth" so-to-speak. He portrays Twain magnificiently. You'll be treated to a Victorian tea as you enjoy Twain's humor, wit and drama. Don't miss it!
