This was an awesome experience to search for my family name and the shrine is beautifully done. The location is easily accessible even with the all the traffic through the area. Highly recommend this for persons who are visiting the area.
This shrine, also called the Mothers' Shrine, is located in Laurie, Missouri, about thirty minutes west of the Lake of the Ozarks. Take Horseshoe Bend in Lake Ozark across the toll bridge ($3 in season, $2 out of season), west to Laurie, Missouri. We visited the week after July 4, 2014. The statue was not rotating at the time...broke? just not on? I don't know. The statue is 14 feet tall...and a fresh look at Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The statue is named "Mary, Mother of the Church." It is sculpted out of stainless steel. The surroundings, including water and fountain features, are set in a natural amphitheater. Names of mothers of all faiths are engraved in the base of the statue. Also on the grounds is a chapel, stations of the cross, commandments and beatitudes, and a small gift shop.
This is one of only 16 National Shrines dedicated to our Mother Mary. You will be hard pressed to find one that is more spectacular than this, with the water setting at the Lake of the Ozarks. Awesome how they carved thousand's of Mother's names in the granite surrounding the revolving statue and water pool. Our family decided to put engrave our Mother's name on here as well, what a great Mother's Day gift from the family!
One of our small groups at Harper Chapel UMC toured the Mothers' Shrine, outdoor grotto and Mothers' Wall of Life today. Names of mothers are engraved in the polished black granite surrounding a large pool, where the 14 foot sculpture of Mary is standing. She rotates in a circle every four minutes. Her hair is flowing, her dress is textured and her hands outstretched. The gardens are gorgeous. What a peaceful place! Our tour guide told us as many Protestants as Catholics attend the outdoor 8PM Saturday night mass during the summer. I can see why!
