battle of athens state historic site

Great place for a family reunion. Lots of room at the shelter, modern bathroom facilities, plus you have the battle site and cannon ball house museum. This is our second family reunion held there. we will definitly use it again for next one. Don't forget the trails , camping, fishing at the lake or river, raspberries and blackberries galore.

As far as battlefields go this isn't the largest but it is a part of American history that was another important part of the Civil War. The hole in the home left by the cannonball helps make history come alive as you can experience the details of this attack and hear the actual words exchanged between family members on opposite sides of the line. The park is well-kept and the volunteers that serve this facility are more than willing to share their thoughts of the battle with intricate detail. Although this attraction is far from a major highway, it is well worth the effort to take a step back in time to relive this event that helped shape our nation.

The person at the museum was wonderful and knowledgable.The site is well kept and clean. The buildings are in good repair and signage is great.While it is not a major civil war site it is nice and part of Missouri's heritage,
