Nice, scenic area, less crowded and frenetic than Lake of the Ozarks to the west. Good dining, lodging, camping, boating, and hiking are all close by. There is also some shopping opportunities for crafts and antiques.
Great place for more wildlife, beaches, and better fishing than Lake of the Ozarks, and better for families that don't want to be around lewd partiers.
This is a very nice size lake for families. Not too crowded, not full of partiers. Plenty of room to tub, fish, etc.
beautiful lake, good for crappie fishing, open waters, lots of beautiful scenery, brought boat as lots of water activities. great for families
Be sure to stop at the visitors' center at the dam. It is extremely well done, with local history of native Americans, French settlers, and even models of the mastodon bones found on the site. The film about the power plant's operations is very good, but the most spectacular part is watching the turkey vultures catch the updrafts at your eye level as you look at the panoramic view through the glass windows.
We started out in an RV at a campground for a one year and then bought our home here 5 years ago. Lots of cliffs w/trees around Truman Lake. Crappie, bass and catfish for anglers. Lots of Corp. property w/trees around the lake to hunt. The Welcome Center and the fish hatchery are must see. Bird watchers will be pleased with the variety of birds, including Bald Eagles. Downtown has boutiques and antiques shops for the shoppers. Lake of Ozarks start just below the Truman damn for more fishing and hunting. Small community without all the busy big city traffic.
We have lived here since 2001 and love it. The fishing is great and is available almost year-round. That is if you like the cold!! Plenty of marinas and boat ramps. Plenty of great campgrounds, including Truman State Park. Great place to vacation (and to live.)
Watched a man catch a 30lb + catfish...I was a little jealous. :) The catfishing here is awesome right up against the rocks by the spillway of the dam.
we drive over it occasionally & it is always a beautiful site. We are looking forward to spending some recreational time out there this summer!
This is a nice, clean lake where families can enjoy nature and not worry about excessive partying or huge boats that will swamp smaller boats. Majority of the boats you see on this lake are pontoons and bass boats. The fishing on this lake is great and there are several ramps around the lake that only charge a small fee to launch your boat. There are also swimming beaches at the state parks. The nicest swim beach we found was Thibaut Point. This is a Corp of Engineers lake so you won't find much in the way of lakeside lodging unless you bring a tent.
This is clean lake to fish and swim. We enjoy camping. This is a corp lake so there is only camping around the edge of the lake. There are hotels in Warsaw and Clinton and other cabins closer. Crappie fishing is great in some point in the spring.
Never saw so many people catching fish. Places to walk around the lake were paved and well maintained.
Great place to relax, fish and spend a few days, very senic.
There is an observatory you can visit. It has dinasaur fossils found in the area....a "look-out" tower with binoculars.....my kids had a blast. Also there are hiking trails all through the wilderness with old homes you can tours. It's absolutely amizing to see the history first hand.
Big late with not alot of boat traffic. Small boats don't get ran over with big waves. There are lots of good swimming holes, and a lot of boat ramp locations.
