This was truely an amazing place to visit, Recently renovated the building has some many fascinating artefacts and presentations of the Civil war, The gentleman at reception was highly knowledgable and gave us a lot of information, very reasonable entrance price and a lovely site, well worth a visit.
I thought the displays of Civil War artifacts were really interesting. I found myself reading all of the information cards that are by the items. I thought their gift shop was great and filled with many nice things.
This is a great little museum on the grounds of historic Jefferson Barracks. The exhibits are well displayed and the staff are helpful and knowledgeable. The thing I enjoyed most about my experience was the gift shop. It is well stocked with not only general Civil War items, but has many items geared towards Missouri and the Border War with Kansas. You will not be disappointed when you visit.
I spent a couple of hours here and enjoyed it very much. The museum is rather small and focuses mainly on the war as it pertained and affected the state of Missouri. Would recommed to anyone interested in the Civil War and Missouri history.
My family and i visted and were not disappointed. Much care was taken to create a very worthwhile musuem and the atmosphere and staff were exceedingly knowlwedgable and gracious. Loved the experience.
The Missouri Civil War Museum at Jefferson Barracks is a thing of quiet beauty. Mark Trout and his small team of volunteers are incredible people who had the patience, ingenuity and tenacity to stay the course during the 12 years it took to renovate the old Post Exchange building and turn it in to an impressive memorial and education center - without the aid of federal or state tax dollars. They transformed a building abandoned since 1946 into a dignified and easily accessible museum with a fascinating collection of artifacts and well-produced videos. Their field trips are carefully curated to meet school curriculum and keep students engaged - no matter what grade. The Missouri Civil War Museum and its staff exude passion for preserving and teaching history while remaining in quiet awe of the service and sacrifice of all veterans.
I spent all day here, hours & hours. The videos were showing footage I had never seen; I learned about little-known battles & skirmishes; & the artifacts the museum has are incredible. I'm a photo nut & seeing the old, old camera & equipment plus the different methods of 'printing' back in the day....wow. Folks of any age will love this and the staff is absolutely wonderful! Everyone was kind, knowledgeable, & very helpful. And a family of deer came to graze as I was leaving when the museum closed! :-)
I would recommend this museum to any one looking for a summary of Missouri's part in the Civil War. While still giving the visitor the overall perspective of how the nation was feeling during this historical era, the museum does an excellent job in bringing out Missouri's part in the war. With great visual displays as well as videos to summarize important information, the museum takes specific effort to show all sides of the conflict in an enduring yet graceful and merciful way. It highlights some of the wars unsung heros and touches on everything from weapontry to medicine to how animals were used in the battles. The gift shop has a variety of books, clothing items and other interesting apparel. A must stop for any history buffs!!!
Recently we took our 9 & 11 year old granddaughters to the new Missouri Civil War Museum. We all really enjoyed it and we all learned a lot too. Taking children places like this brings history to life for them and helps them to know these things really did happen. They have done a great job at this museum with the artifacts and they are still growing. There are a couple of movies and even the younger one said that it helped her because this was what she was currently studying. Afterwards we went to the adjoining National Cemetery and found the Civil War Section. The girls were so amazed to see so many graves marked Unknown. This gave us an opportunity to talk about what it was like for the soldiers to be far from home and all alone. The girls proclaimed it one of the best days ever! (Grandma loves it when they find my historical and educational trips so interesting.)
We went for the German Heritage Celebration and ended up staying several hours viewing the exhibits. Staff was very friendly and quick to offer assistance. I can't tell you how much we appreciated the museum - and it was all free!
This was my first visit to the Missouri Civil War Museum and I must say it was first-class. In addition to an excellent collection of artifacts (many belonging to notable CW figures), there is an large collection of Confederate era currency. The displays are well presented and housed in a beautifully restored building. There are additional displays of WW1 artifacts in the lower level of the building, plus historical U.S. Flags. The length of time spent there depends on your level of interest. I personally spent about 1.5 hours. While there, a drive through the cemetery is an emotional experience.
A little out of the way but time well spent remembering those who have made our country. The exhibits were very well laid out with many informative writings. Would encourage anyone in the area to spend a few hours viewing this museum.
Newly renovated old building. Very clean. Friendly staff. We did enjoy the display of war memorabilia but it is not a large display and we felt it was a bit over priced. You could walk through the entire display in 10-15 minutes if you wanted too. Adult admission was $7 and children $5. We liked the museum but felt for the almost $25 cost for a family of four for a 15 minute display (not including the movies), it was a little over priced. It was a newly renovated builing so maybe the rates will drop when construction costs are paid off.
Displays were well thought out. Enough stuff to be interesting, but not so much that it is overwhelming.
