Spent three hours there and the kids could have stayed longer. Lots of fun, hands-on exhibits, fun for many ages - my kids are 5 and 7 and they were excited about most of the exhibits, but there were some that were still a little too old for them. we will be back.
We had an absolute blast. The weather was terrible and when traveling with a 3 year old, just hanging out doesn't cut it. He was able to run and play, and touch EVERYTHING. The volunteers/employees were plentiful. We had an issue with bigger kids who's parents were no where to be seen dominating some of the exhibits and/or not being cautious of littler children. Staff didn't seem concerned (I will step right in there though) but otherwise, it was a great day. I was amazed that some of the exhibits I thought would be too advanced were my son's favorites. Standing inside a giant eyeball or nose anyone?
My granddaughters, ages 8 & 12 thoroughly enjoyed the Discover Center. I had to force them to leave - always a good sign!! It was a great value for the money. Buy the additional tickets required for the High Wire Bicycle before you go in!! Interactive learning experience suited for ages 5 and up, or perhaps very advanced 4 year olds.
While most of the exhibits and hands-on experiments are similar to other science centers, the stand-out attraction is the bicycle ride three stories high (and yes, it's thrilling yet perfectly safe)!
My husband, son and I all enjoyed this place. I loved that they had a discovery room for smaller children, which allowed for my son to play with exhibits his size. The staff was super friendly and a great help. It was worth the money and we will be back when we are back in Springfield!
So glad Springfield has a place like this. So many fun and interesting things for children and adults of all ages. They won't even realize they are learning! For the journalist, you can publish your own story and print your photo on a paper, report a newscast on TV or be a weather forecaster, build a dam, be hamster power, lie on a bed of nails, make your hair stand on end, spin like a figure skater, and many other fun things. There is a special area for children under 5, as well. You can easily spend hours here, if you don't wear out first. There are 3 stories of activities, lots of stairs, but also an elevator.
Love the high-wire bike ride! There is so much education and fun in this place! I will really miss it when my child won't go anymore! Great day with the family!!!
My six-year-old and eleven-year-old daughters and I brought a college-age International Friend from China here on a rainy Saturday. The Center has a wide range of activities that enthralled all three ages. From hands-on physical activities that burn off the wigglies to hands-on passive activities [the Van de Graaf generator was a great hit with all three long-haired girls!] to informative activities in the Science Lab to the daredevil--yet safe--high-wire bicycle it was an afternoon well spent. Lots of great photo ops!! Heads-up: you need to buy a ticket at the register for the bicycle; it will cost an extra $3--they won't let you on without one; but, you do get to spend a fair amount of time on it. Shorties can get on; the attendant will attach a rope to help those whose feet won't reach the pedals. The older girls loved leaning way to the left and way to the right.
The discovery center is one of Springfield's best attractions, there is so much for the kids to see and do, and its a great way for them to burn off some steam on a winter day. oh, and the highwire bike is worth a try!
There is so much to see and do! Keeps the kiddos busy for hours!! Sounds a little pricey until you realize you've been in there for over 3 hours! Cheaper than a movie!
I loved it here! My 2 year old son spent 3 hours here amused the whole time. I can't make that happen on the very best day, so I was pleasantly surprised. The best part was that it's educational for kids and adults, we had just as much fun as him.
Thank you for writing a review on Trip Advisor. You actually have written a review for Springfield Conservation Nature Center. I love that place as well. Discovery Center of Springfield does not have any outdoor trails but we do have fantastic hands-on exhibits related to all the sciences.
We enjoyed our visit and would recommend this place to anyone with children of pretty much all ages. We do not have any ourselves but found the interactive displays fun and it kept our interest the whole time we were there. We spent a few hours but kids could probably spend nearly a whole day; plan accordingly.
We celebrated our grandson's first birthday at the Discovery Center! We will definitely do that again! The staff was helpful and attentive, the cost of the event was reasonable and it included passes for as long as we could stay! By far, more entertaining and educational than any Chuck E. Cheese party! I Highly recommend a visit to the Discovery Center in Springfield. It is a whole lot of fun.....but, be careful.....you might learn something! :)
Where else can you take your kids and NOT tell them to stop touching everything? Hands on experiences make learning fun and I love this place. Fun place for mom to take a breather!
