Spent 4 hours visiting the wildlife. We watched a 2ft baby gator chase minnows along the bank for quite a while which was amazing. Took walks along the boardwalks and paths watching alligators, birds, and fish around the lilies. May sound strange, but saw a bird fold several Lilly pads into a square...have no clue as to why either, but was neat to watch. Didn't see the eagles or any osprey this time, but did see quite a few large and baby alligators. The only problem here is people with no home training. Seems some people have the desire to carve ugly things into the wood along the boardwalks, so don't let your kids spent too much time reading them. The bank bucket people fishing need to pick up their trash (chip bags, bait packs, fishing line, ect..) at the overlook, between Lokafoama and Bluff, at the boat ramp of Lokafoama, and along the spillway at Bluff. If you go to fish or visit, please don't throw your trash in the water... It is a beautiful place and will continue if people would take care of it. They use to keep the picnic areas trimmed where you could sit and look out across the lake, but it's a little grown up now. The museum is pretty neat, don't forget to check it out. Other than that, we'll be back to visit like we have in the past.
Best of what nature has to offer: Lakes, trees ,birds, and gators without any danger. A place to see seasonal changes and seek solitude to recharge your batteries.
I absolutely love going to the Refuge. There is great fishing there from March through October, abundant wildlife, I love going there to snap a few pictures of the deer or an awesome sunset.
For and avid outdoors person, the refuge is one of the best. Take your binoculars with you to see the many species of birds. On occasion you'll see owls. The waterfowl are abundant in their natural habitat.
Loved the lake..The wildlife sightings ar always fun..take your time and enjoy.be sure and look for the geese and if your lucky you'll see alligators sunning..It's a little bit of a drive, but worth it..
Paved main roads for everyone. Gravel roads for trucks so you can wander in the "wilderness". Eagles that are incredible to watch. Overlooks and walkways. Binoculars available at the overlooks. Walking trails marked to learn the different animals and plants and trees. Picnic area with grills and tables. Boat docks. The sunsets are just absolutely beautiful, they just don't last long enough!! Love the museum and the gift shop. Been visiting the Refuge for over 40 years and always enjoy the improvements and peaceful atmosphere. I make a point to visit at least once a month.
woodpeckers, GBH, gators, and more. No traffic. Good for hiking, road biking, and trail riding. Watch out for hunting seasons.
love the Goose Overlook to watch deer and waterfowl all times of the year. if you catch a glimpse of the bald eagles it's a bonus!
The lake has quite a number of birds and I am told an eagle. There is an old cemetery near the lake, Some of the immediate area's origional settlers rest there.
We have enjoyed the programs, especially for children. The land is beautiful and there are things to do for every age.
