Well worth the stop in. Right next to the Blues & Rock Museum. Stan's art captures the Delta ambience and its a great performance space, as well. I recommend at least two nights in Clarksdale--there's just too much music and history here to check out in a single day. Stop in here, Cat Head, Bluesberry, Red's, Ground Zero, Deak's harp shop...you can't go wrong, really.
The Hambone Art Gallery was one of the few places open during the week. Nice selection of art - very friendly and personable owners (Stan and Dixie Street). Check it out...a don't miss place in Clarksdale.
Clarksdale, Mississippi, heart of the MS Delta and birthplace of the Blues, has live music 365 days a year. Hambone Gallery, owned by artist Stan and Dixie Street, both musicians, is the go-to spot on Tuesday nights in Clarksdale. Live blues is heard in the main gallery room every Tuesday night. The tiki bar and ever-evolving decor add a homey, vacation element to the congenial atmosphere the owners have crafted. The stage looks like a shack porch, and tourists will always leave feeling as if they have heard some incredible blues and have made new, lifelong friends from all over the world. tell 'em Poor William and Magical Madge sent ya! You won't be disappointed with an early week visit to Hambone! And, buy some incredible original art pieces and prints from Stan!
Unusual store full of local painters, artists, music, etc. Lots to look at and talk with Stan about the history of Clarksdale and it's music history.
We didn't see much of the shop because there was a mini blues festival going on at the time, but from what I could see they had some nice pictures. The festival was pretty cool with plenty of seating and a bar that sold broon, but the highlight was the band we saw but sadly can't remember the name - they were a local family of blues men and women and were immense; loved it
the best in art , music, and great times!!! Nothing to dislike! Stan and his wife Dixie are so down to earth you feel like you're with family! Great beer selection and blody marys accompany the best in delta blues music!!!
Had an excellent afternoon at Stan's who came around to introduce himself. He also played harmonica with more than one artist in the afternoon. A lovely place with very friendly people.
We were here on a Tuesday so it was music night. Great atmosphere and good band - Sugar Heavy and the Sweet tones with a guest spot by Watermelon Slim who was a dead ringer for Tom Waits and a real showman. Good artwork by Stan - it was a busy night so we didn't get to talk to him as others obviously have but I'd be surprised if there was anywhere better in Clarksdale.
Very nice, small gallery tucked into the downtown area. Staff was super nice and friendly and available to answer any questions I had. I believe they offer music one night a week and that might be the best time to visit and mingle with patrons. Small but nice selection of beverages to enjoy while browsing.
We always stop by Hambone during the Blues Festival. Stan and Dixie are gracious hosts and quite talented artists in many genres. Last trip, Stan and local blues legend Leo Welch were performing on the indoor sound stage, and a couple of the tourists sat in during the jam session. This trip, there was a duo performing, as Stan put the finishing touches on a painting and Dixie tended "bar".The gallery is mostly Stan's works of paintings, prints, and mixed media selections, all available for purchase. The sound stage has a drum kit, mikes, etc. and several guitars. The bar is simple, with 5-6 stools, and offers several brands of cold beer and wine. Since it is an art gallery, there is no smoking, of course. There is seating for 20-30 on a variety of tables & chairs, church pews, sofas, or wing back chairs. Something for everyone.Mid- August, air conditioning, cold beer, smoke free, great live blues in and art gallery. What could be better?
A great little place. The owners have just installed a small stage and the night we visited we listened to Deak Harp accompanied by T Model Fords Grandson on drums.they have a small bar in the corner of the gallery and like most places in Clarksdale, you do not have to spend a lot of money to have a good time.
If you can get to Clarksdale, MS, you need to spend time cruising the entire town's rich assortment of southern blues history attractions. Included are; the Hambone Gallery, the Rock & Blues Museum, Ground Zero (Morgan Freeman's joint), Hopson Plantation, and a bunch of other places that, together, make for an incredible experience. If you're lucky, you'll get a chance to chat with either Dixie or Debby at Hambone, and Marc at the Museum. They can tell stories about Clarksdale that will make your time irrelevant. Hopson has to be seen, understood, and photographed --- and then you'll have the challenge of trying to explain it to your friends as a real experience. One real good thing about Clarksdale's location is that it's between Memphis and Baton Rouge on US 61 (the Blues Highway). If you've got the time to experience all three, and their exceptional musical cultures, you'll never be the same.
Hambone was recommended by our Innkeeper, Bubba, from the Five and Dime Lofts. What a great venue and the people were so welcoming. We'll go back for any event!
Want to buy some awesome art at reasonable prices? ...listen to live BLUES? kick back with a drink or two? .. meet legendary musicians? ... THIS is the place for you =) --- small, warm and intimate gallery with an eclectic collection of many 'media' displays... Stan Street is a multi-talented musician and more ...
I arrived on a slow day. Stan stopped, talked to me, and gave me plenty of advice on what to see. I talked with both Stan and his wife, listen to them play music, and enjoyed their company.
