No a big fan of Oprah... but I hear and read people say Kosciusko needs to do something about Oprah birthplace... Well they have tried to pave the road but she didn't want too. So she needs to donate some time and money herself to make her birthplace nicer for people that drives forever just to see it. The boys and girls club is nice that she built here. If I had the money she has my home town of 365 people with one store would be 100x nicer than it is now... Just saying... It could be a beautiful spot...
I really don't like her. I feel that if God took time to let u make it and never once did you think about how u had to live to get were ur at. I'm happy she made it but to forget where u came from is just crazy. The only thing u did was get a Boys & Girls club. Which, its one is in every city. But, I guess being in the limelight its better than helping where you where born and raised. It is so sad. I'm very happy and proud to say its my daddy's hometown. And I love being from Mississippi... And if God was to bless me with that much money, I would never forget the people or town I live in.
You would think that Oprah, with her gazillion dollars would do something with this place as much as she likes the limelight. A reconstruction and a museum wouldn't cost {her} that much and I'm sure it would get a lot of visitors as she is adored by millions (-1, I'm not a big fan) and would add some bucks to her hometown. It's just a mudhole and a sign that's faded. Not impressed.
We went quite a bit out of our way to see Oprah's birthplace which turned out to be a sign. There is a church nearby that notes that is the place where she had her first audience.
Well, there's a sign and some seats, so while she's an incredible woman it's hard to review this particular monument. It was interesting to see the town in which she was born though.
We were excited to know that the small town we were visiting was a birth place for Oprah Winfrey's, But very disappointed after visiting the spot, Place was hard to find, need some cleaning around the spot, currently no real house were she was born, They should make replica of the house for visitors, Like the one in Tupelo for Elvis Presley.
We visited Oprah Winfrey road on our trip from New Orleans to Clarksdale. It was a bit out of our way but I am glad we did it. It feels good to have been to this quiet town in Mississippi and to know that someone like Oprah started her life here. It is proof that dreams can come true and you can achieve big things if you set your mind to it. Oprah is one of the most powerful women in the world and I am glad we made the detour to Kosciusko.
When I was traveling through the deep south and realized that we would be passing Oprah's birthplace and church outside of Kosciusko Mississippi, I immediately put it in my travel plans. However, I found it very difficult to find directions. Once I got to the city limits, I was surprised that there was no big sign indicating that just outside Kosciusko is the birthplace of Oprah Winfrey, like there is for Tina Turner in Nutbush, TN or Bill Clinton in Hope, AR. I had to do a lot of research to find the tiny little washed out dirt road called CR-2207, one small stretch of which is named Oprah Winfrey Rd which you will not find on many maps.I was surprised that the city of Kosciusko does not celebrate Oprah's birthplace. It is very inspirational to see the humble beginnings of one of the most inspiring and powerful women in the world who overcame so much to be a leader of generousity and tolerance. I wish I knew why the city seems to shun her birthplace instead of celebrate it. Once you get to this small stretch of CR-2207, there is a nice sign indicating Oprah Winfrey Road and another giant sign on the site of where her house used to be located. It indicates that this is the first home site of Oprah Winfrey and describes her home as a wood frame house and that she moved to Milwaukee at age six. It also directs visitors to the church where she made her first speaking appearance which is within walking distance. The location of Oprah Winfrey Road is on CR-2207 just north of CR-3034. There is a big sign where her house used to be and once finally there, you can't miss it.
