The tanglefoot trail is a rails to trails project that follows the old railroad bed. The trail is a little over 40 miles long and has several places to stop along the way.
The. Trail runs behind my neighborhood and is an excellent place for me to ride. I'm 63 yrs old and not the most confident bike rider. I feel very safe on the trail. It's mostly flat with very few hills to climb. There are several places to get onto the trail. There is a security guard in a golf cart employed by the Union Co. sheriff who rides the trail regularly. Very shady and peaceful.
Wonderful paved trail with stops every 5-7 miles. They have built nice "whistle stops" with drinking fountains, bathrooms, and picnic tables. The people in the area were so friendly. Really impressed with New Albany, MS. Cute downtown with nice shops. Had the best burger ever at Game Tyme.
Second ride on the Tanglefoot trail on Saturday. Parking at Ecru "whistle stop" on the grass, many cars there at 0823. Rode north towards the Northern end at New Albany, MS. A long grade at the start of the ride a sure way of getting warmed up. Same scenery, dense woods, fields of crops, bridges over very dry creeks and Kudzu in some spots. Good shade most of the trail, not a bad ride at almost noon. End of the trail at New Albany very abrupt! Trail ends at the end of a bridge over West Main ST. Last 100 feet torn up pavement, preparation for the new trail site I hope! . A good bike shop at the SW corner, "Trails and Treads" Good selection of energy bars to make the ride back better. Picked up another CamelBack bottle for Gail, replace the one in our freezer in Polk City, FL. Even a check list not enough some times.Looking forward to return to the Tanglefoot Trail next year on our "Spring Migration" ride!
When visiting New Albany I have regularly ridden my bicycle with friends there. This is the first year the whole trail has been opened and we rode a good portion of it. It is a nice trail. Plenty of shade to make it a nice ride any time of day. It is 44+ miles long with places to refresh and relax along the way if you wish.
We stayed at a local campground and road the entire trail. We broke down into two days and visited most of the cities along the trail. This is one of the finest paved bike trails that I have ever seen. There is a whistle stop about every 6 miles. A whistle stop is a shelter with running water, flush toilets, picnic tables and shade. They also provide a few benches along the way. The route is flat and can be ridden by anyone. We met nice people everywhere we went.
I have been told that riding with a purpose is the best way to ride. That being said we rode from the Ingomar whistlestop to New Albany. Right around the corner from the trailhead is a small slice of heaven called Game Tyme, a quick snack of fried mushrooms and a glass of sweet tea later and we were energized for the ride back. This was one of the best experiences I've had in a while. It's a must do if you find that you have a couple of hours on a sunny afternoon.
