As a vendor at AMS for over 10 years and having been in a supervisory role in a professional setting for many years in my career, I must say that the management at AMS has worked untiringly over the years to balance the needs of the customers with the challenges of managing 50+ vendors. This is not an easy task, and in order to maintain collegiality among vendors, rules must exist, rules must be followed consistently and rules must apply to all vendors and all sales equally. In my experience, this has been the case. Do I agree with all of the rules? Not necessarily. Do I understand their importance? For sure. Unlike flea markets and privately owned stores, AMS management works for us vendors in our absence. We have to trust that our contracts with the mall will be upheld. What I have always loved the most about AMS is that the antique and vintage items offered are varied and appeal to many different interests, and each season brings in many of our former customers back for more items and many new faces to begin their explorations.
The lady who works behind the desk on the weekend must not want to help move her vendors items. Terse and not willing to contact her vendors to inquire if they would consider a lower price. Prices are firm. Not willing to negotiate (as you can usually do at most furniture stores or antique malls) even though we were offering cash and were only 25 dollars less than asking. Wouldn't even take our phone number in case the vendor decided to accept the offer at a later date. There are better places in town. Check out Pette's Antiques further up on 51. A bit more pricey, but Pette, the lady who runs it, is quite helpful, their pieces are quality antiques (not splitting, poorly refinished, or chipped as Antique Mall of the South). You can also find other quality items at Bloomingdeals, Palladian Consign and Design, Repeat Street, and the Flea Market on Flowood drive. You time is better spent elsewhere in my opinion.
Enjoyed looking at yesteryear. Interesting items and friendly people. Easy access into and out of the area. Lots of nice antiques and smaller older pieces.
The previous reviewer, Donna. H., must have reviewed the wrong mall. The Antique Mall of the South in Ridgeland in it's over 20 years of operation only had antiques, collectibles and some high level decorative objects. It has never allowed Flea market items. It would be a shame if her inaccurate review was a result that she might have felt "the people are not that friendly." The Mall is clean, air-conditioned, heated, and the 60 plus dealer booth and display areas are neat and well decorated. I have visited antique stores and malls in most of the United States and in several foreign countries and it is much above average for a show place for antiques of wide variety and wide price range. It's 14,000 square feet of floor space allows adequate space for good examination of items for sale. Well worth your time if interested in good antique items.
Don't expect them to be too friendly if you go before they open at 10 a.m. Inside there is no air, so go on a cool day and you can browse through standard flea market items. Some is priced okay, some overpriced. I've been many times but have never purchased anything other than a few toys my grandsons pick out. To be very honest the people are not that friendly.
I nearly missed this Antique Mall, but thanks to my Garmin, I picked it up. There is another antique mall in Jackson, one that advertises as the largest in Jackson which is correct, but this one in Ridgeland is both larger and the prices better; Ridgeland is only about 6 miles from Jackson. Highly recommended. That is, if you don't mind being tempted by great deals and antiques! I did not escape scot free but am happy with my purchases. There is AC, over 60 dealers in the roughly 14,000 square feet and plenty of parking. Easy to find with GPS. FYI, items under $100 are firm.
