If you have a little time and want to see some different things from old Tupelo, it is worth a visit. They have an interesting model train running, some old fire trucks, an old diner, and a small room with old medical and dental equipment that is scary/fascinating. Though not connected to Tupelo, there is a wonderful collection of Hollywood pictures, old toys, and comicsthat are on loan from someone that may be or has been a Tupelo resident. The museum also contains a separate military section that we did not visit.
all the employees were extremely welcoming and went above and beyond in helping us to enjoy not only their museum but also their town!
Good history of Tupelo, but the veterans museum in back stole the show. Memorabilia from different wars also lots of nazi items as well as American items.
We arrived on a Monday, when it was officially closed but were fortunate to be let in anyway. The collection is really diverse so there's something to interest everyone, regardless of age . The veterans museum, accessed through the same entrance is excellent and contains extensive personal memorabilia from many wars. Fascinating stuff for anyone with an interest in either military or social history. The various buildings and farming / industrial exhibits outside also give insights into the way the local society has changed . Keep a lookout for Jerry , who is a fountain of information and was kind enough to show us around.
We stopped by here and met Tony Lute, owner if the Veterans Museum, Kenny, owner of the old movie, circus, and magic show posters; it was a great history lesson and recommend if you're in Tupelo to visit because it has lots of great physical scenery of a world no longer known, especially to our children!
West of town on Highway 278 and just past the Natchez Trace Parkway entrance road, take a left on Rutherford road. Right turn into Tupelo city park and the Oren Dunn City Museum. A very nice opportunity to see the way things were in early Tupelo and the area. Several nice outdoor exhibits and buildings. Of Special Note: DO NOT miss the Veterans Museum in the back part of the Oren Dunn building. No specific admission charge to the Veteran's Museum .. BUT .. donations are happily accepted. Lots and lots of military stuff to see.
Easy to find, free parking, nominal admission fee ($3), very interesting outbuildings. There is a Veteran's museum in the back which you can visit for free but they do accept and appreciate donations. The veteran's museum is owned by an individual collector. You would not believe the sheer quantity of items in there! The owner, Tony Lute, has another museum that is now closed from which he rotates items to this museum. He happened to be on-hand the day we were there and he is very friendly and informative. Many unique items that you would not expect an individual collector to have can be seen here...they even have a B-52 Bomber engine! The Oren Dunn City museum alone is worth a trip when you are in Tupelo but the Veteran's museum is the "cherry on top."
We loved the admission price, which also included the very interesting Veterans Museum attached to the Oren Dunn Museum.Staff was very friendly.
I saw a brosure of this place when i was in tupelo and decided to stop and take a look. you cant beat the price ( $3.oo for adults.) There is also a vetereans museum behind the building thats free. out front there are a bunch of old buildings and trains. we spent quite a lot of time there and got our moneys worth. Everyone that worked there couldnt have been nicer.
This museum has a lot of items on a lot of subjects. It would benefit greatly from more organization. The outside displays are a collection of misc artifacts which would benefit from more identification. Having said this, my wife and I spent 75 minutes here, but we tend to look at and read everything. This is a nice stop if you are in the area and have extra time. It is not a destination attraction.
