It is a beautifully designed and crafted garden, marvelously restored to 1940s period when the writer's mother "had things pretty much the way she wanted them." I have visited many more impressive home gardens, but the Welty readers will all attest to the impact of familiarity when you are surrounded by the plants of her books and the garden-prose she cultivated like basket cuttings.I enter this review only because someone established this page as a separate attraction. The house and garden must be taken in together to enjoy the wonder of this writer's home life -- almost 80 years 'rooted' in this spot. Plant and gardener become one within such a lifetime. There are marvelous tours and videos, rooms and garden trellises, cats and author's corner to discover, as well as smelling the roses and camellias.I strongly agree with others that before you visit, you read about Eudora Welty; or better, read her writings... "A Curtain of Green" would be a good start.
This is one of my favorite places to go, particularly on a spring day when the spring flowers are in bloom. It is in our neighborhood and is really special.
The tour includes the house and garden. They have very cool bookmarks in the gift store. Our guide was well informed and pleasant
It was raining the day we were there, so we saw the garden only from the windows and the side porch, but it looked like it was a small gem. For garden enthusiasts, book time to see this while visiting the house.
The garden tour was part of the home tour. It was a cold, drizzly day but worth it to wander and see her lovely gardens.
I had a wonderful docent give the tour. I felt like I gained more insight about Eudora Welty after seeing her home and garden. There was and excelled movie to see first . I would suggest the Spring Spring when the garden is blooming and the weather is not as sticky. Recommend a few of her books, looking at her photography and reading about her life and friends first.
There is a cat on the loose here so be brave and enjoy the sights but go inside and view the video. If you are a reader I would read her work first it makes it more interesting .
Great opportunity to walk where the Pulitzer Prize winner worked with her hands in the dirt to create such Southern beauty!
Very pretty garden but you need to be there in April for all the flowers. Magnolia trees were still blooming and iris plants but that's about all.
I absolutely loved Eudora Welty's Garden! So historic!!
I saw it at night during a wedding reception and had explored it during the previous day. This is not the zoo and may not be exactly what you want for an activity, but it's definitely worth a visit.
