I believe this is a donation site, this is another place I donated on the way in and again on the way out. not only is there an unbelievable collection of historical natchez photos, but the building, in it's self is very interesting. if you like old historical photos you will enjoy this. I had missed it in the past, but am sure glad I didn't miss it this time.
A local resident recommended this permanent exhibit to us, and it was a highlight of our visit. A selection of professional photos lovingly researched, blown up, framed, and curated, from a trove of 75,000 pictures discovered by a local doctor. All are related to people, places, and history of Natchez. Loved the portraits of ladies in their finery, showing changing fashions from 1860-1920. You will get a sense of life in Natchez, including on the river, the railroads, etc. This is awesome stuff!
the chapel always has a photography display that helps a visitor understand more about the history, culture, and people of the region. The explanations under each photo brings the picture to life. We have been to Natchez twice and each time visited the chapel to see the display. The first time we saw the pictures of the freemen and women of the pre-Civil war period, this time we saw photos that developed the everyday life of the people and their businesses and economy in a certain historic period. A first class display. And very good explanation and demonstration of the use of early photography.
Thanks to a gentleman in Natchez who rescued old photographs of people and places in Natchez, this church has a fantastic exhibit that shows much of the history of the town and its people. There is so much to learn at this exhibit. One of the best we have seen. Amazingly, it is free.
Sometimes we find it is restful to find a church and just sit for awhile especially if you have been on the go all day. This church was not only beautiful inside but also outside. To add to this they housed an amazing photograph collection relating to the earlier history of Natchez which should not be missed.
It's wonderful this great old church has made a commitment to present this fantastic collection of photos...everything from the fashions of the day, note able Natchez citizens, great children's photos, steamboats, daily street scenes...it shows the city as it was, and still is. Worth the time...wish they had a book, with the photos in it. The church is also lovely and worth seeing.
Admission is free to this historic church to view the collection of historic photographs that give a visual history lesson to what daily life looked like in Natchez over 100 years ago...fashion, homes, children, animals, riverboats, etc. One can also go into the beautiful sanctuary to just look or find a place for quiet meditation if desired. What a nice thing for this church to do for the public! Thank you!
Our party of 5 seniors (2 American, 3 British) first spotted this church on a carriage tour of Natchez upon arrival in town recently. The church was lovely from the outside, and we decided to go back to visit the next day. Were we ever glad we did! We entered via the State Street entrance, and were greeted by a very friendly church member who gave us a tour. It was just picture-perfect inside, with doors on the pews which is unusual for the south. Afterwards we discovered the treasure trove of Natchez photographs displayed in several rooms upstairs in the gallery. Wow! We enjoyed it all so much that we spent 3 hours here instead of the planned 1 hour. An added bonus was a band rehearsal going on at the same time, as this day was the start of the annual Music Festival in town. Make time for this stop - you won't be disappointed.
Apparently much overlooked but well worth a visit .The exhibition of photographs documenting Natchez people from pre Civil War onwards is amazing .Some of the photos you could have thought had been taken yesterday .The social history they tell is fascinating .
Their exhibit of historic photos is incredible. The sanctuary is pretty much as it was during the early 1800's, just beautiful.
We had a wonderful visit here! The docent who showed us around was very informative and friendly! The picture museum was extraordinary! A must see!
the old church was very pretty but the old photo display that is ongoing/shown there is so worth at least 30 min to 1 hour of your time. It would be an especially good stop on a hot afternoon. It's quiet inside and a church member is there to offer info.
Interesting history, friendly guide, and beautiful building. The historical photographs on display in other parts of the building are a true gem. What a treasure.
Lovely building considering when building started, large with free access throughout. There was also an impressive display of very early photographs of Natchez and the trade on the river. Well worth a visit.
The clarity on the photographs in the exhibition was incredible given how old they were. Well worth visiting and you could stroll round at your own pace
