The museum has a good film of 30 minutes to start, and the diorama of the battle ground makes the visit to the battlefield make more sense. The railroad set up is meticulously done. Worth a stop.
We went for dinner and ended up making memories. The experience starts when you walk in the door and are greeted by an awesome staff along with Chris, the chef and co-owner. Chris gave us a tour of the beautiful house along with the history. Everything is beautiful and well maintained. The grounds are gorgeous and tended with obvious loving care. The personal touches are what made this evening so special for us.
We are staying 2 nights in this wonderful property and have found everyone very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a tour of the main house and learned about it's history. I would recommend staying in the main house if you have the option, although we have found the Carriage House charming and very comfortable. Our meal last night was excellent; so we are planning to eat here again tonight! The breakfast was also very good.
My recent stay at Anchuca proved to be just as delightful as my previous visits. The staff greets you with just the right amount of Southern grace. I immediately felt like I was with family. I stayed in one of the Carriage house rooms that are like a step back in time with much required modern indoor plumbing. The grounds are lovely so sit and have a drink in the courtyard or by the pool. The atmosphere is serene and beautiful. Humid heat is a part of a Mississippi summer but the shaded areas and a cool drink will take care of you. Definitely eat dinner in the Cafe. Chris' food is to die for...my personal favorite is the perfectly cooked filet with scrumptious cheese grits. Breakfast is always delicious and provides an eclectic choice of mouth watering selections. Anchuca is a slice of Southern heaven. I highly recommend it to one and all!
Or nearly so, it was pretty. The collection was thick. Furniture isn't made like this anymore, as the wood is no longer available and the tools wore out with the craftsmen.
Great building and story. Also, you can eat there too and it is even better. Five stars. Fried Green Tomatoes best ever!
We recently spent one night at Anchuca, and I regretted that we didn't have time to take the house tour the next morning. We stayed in the adjoining carriage house, and our room was a little small but very well appointed. The staff thought of everything to add to our comfort, including lovely coffee cups and saucers for morning coffee. We enjoyed drinks on the patio listening to the fountain and were pleased to be able to sit outside in February! Breakfast was delicious--not lavish--but quite good. A biscuit was included with each serving, and I would have liked to be offered another one. That would be a good touch, I think. The coffee was particularly good with cinnamon sprinkled on the grounds just before brewing.
The architecture in itself was most interesting since it was built in stages at different times. The furnishings are fabulous as well. Interesting that Jefferson Davis's brother lived here, and Davis gave his last public speech from the upstairs balcony. The house survived the Siege of Vicksburg and was used during the war. The grounds are lovely. Didn't have the chance to eat or stay there.
We were in a hurry so missed the upstairs due to a time restriction. The video was informative and I enjoyed seeing the home while learning the history that took place. Jefferson Davis made his last public speech on the balcony. I would have enjoyed more time to really learn and explore the history at this home. They have a restaurant if you have the chance to dine here. Very quaint with indoor and outdoor seating.
This elegant mansion is a quiet, tasteful look into the southern past. When you tour this museum-in-a-home, you are surrounded by gracious history (the furniture, dishes, carpets, curios, pictures, etc.). We were on a time-limited tour, so we did not have the time to eat here or stay overnight, both options I would definitely consider if I were ever to pass this way again. Be sure to tour this lovely mansion while you are in Vicksburg. A must-see for history buffs.
This is a must on everyone's list who visits Vicksburg. History and wonderful food. Buy the cookbook if you can.
We made the mistake of not having our accommodations here but had the most amazing dinner! Our dining experience started with a very warm welcome from Tarsha Neal. She is a great asset to the Mansion... Our serveuse was Kerri Hutson who continued the pampering throughout the dinner. Very attentive to our needs, she too helped create this magical evening. To top it off, we even got a visit from the chef to ensure that all was to our taste. We have been to several fine restaurants but this one was exquisite! We will definitely be staying at Anchuca the next time we visit Vicksburg
This is a wonderful tour of a well-maintained Southern mansion. If you want to see how the owners of the Old South lived, go to Anchuga and Cedar Grove.
We appreciated the great beauty and history of Anchuca. The ghost stories that I read on-line were so exciting! However, the staff guided us to a table to watch a video and told us to feel free to walk through ourselves. Not what we had in mind!
My wife and I had a really nice experience at Anchuca. Restaurant is in the back portion of beautiful and historic Anchuca Bed & Breakfast. Reserved a table for 6:00 dinner. Were served good wines and great salads with meal. I had the sea bass special - delicious and a nice size portion. My wife had the Shrimp & Grits. No room for dessert.
