I'm not a golfer, so this is not about the golf course, but about the catering offered at the Wintonbury Hills Golf Course. Last summer, my family celebrated my sister's 90th birthday one Sunday afternoon at the Golf Course. They have a large patio area behind the clubhouse that overlooks the golf course and meadows. There is a large canopy that covers the patio, and sides that can come down if there is really inclement weather. Although it was a warm day, we were shielded from the sun, and were never uncomfortable. We had a group of about 45 (friends and family), and when I arrived, the tables were all nicely set up with 8 to a table. Color choices for linens were selected in advance along with a menu. When we made our menu selections, the catering staff was most accommodating, allowing us to make some changes to the written menu. They also set up a table for us where we could place gifts and some decorations that we brought. The light lunch that we had selected was nicely served and was very good. They also set up a beverage bar on the patio so no one had to go inside to the restaurant/bar for drinks. Instead of our bringing in a birthday cake, they made cupcakes which were beautifully decorated in colors of our choosing. The staff was very attentive throughout the event and, since there was no event following us, did not rush us. This was the second time we had a party there, and we had no disappointments nor disagreements. The catering fees had a broader range than elsewhere. I highly recommend the Wintonbury Hills Golf Course for gatherings that are too large for the average home.
The course is challenging, has interesting holes and scenic views and is well-kept, except for the inexplicable hundreds of unrepaired ball marks on the greens. It's an accomplishment to get to the greens, but once there good luck making a putt outside 5 feet without your ball pin-balling hither and yon. The starter was great - explained the course layout, cart policy and all in a very positive friendly manner. So-so reception the pro shop where no words of greeting were expressed. Despite seeing a cart boy bringing carts to several players, sadly we were not and had to get our own. Putting green gives a good indication of how fast the greens will be but without the added treachery of the ball marks. Pace of play was just a shade over 4 hours. The Tap Inn restaurant attached to the pro shop - C+ food at best for what we ordered, pricing was about average. If you get a tee time deal for around $50 you may feel you broke out even with the whole experience, but if you pay the full $80 and get what we got that day you will have felt cheated. Might be back in the future, but unless things get much better it would be a casual once every few years kind of thing.
Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield is one of our favorites. The course is "fair", but there are challenging holes for all skill levels. The course is excellently maintained and the pace of play is very good for a public course. There is a nice practice putting and chipping area, and a driving range is a short car ride away.
Won a odessey putting contest last july almost to the day! Went to use it.. no! They said it was expired. Funny I'm sure odessey paid for such an event that people may win. So me playing would not have cost the course a thing! Really bad management! So....think before you spend $$ to be insulted at a over priced course! Thanks for nothing! Fitzguru83@gmail.com
overall, a nice golf course, a bit expensive. Unfortunately, all 4 times I have played here, the staff is not too friendly or helpful, (especially the pro shop & the carts setup).
My wife and I went for a round of golf while visiting family in CT. Wintonbury hills is less than three blocks away so we decided to go play. The course was in amazing shape; fairways and greens were well groomed and the views around the course we remarkable. Several holes have a view of Talcot mountain. The staff was extremely friendly and willing to help out anywhere they could. A couple years ago it was on the LPGA tour, would be great if the town of Bloomfield could make that happen again in the near future. Yes, I said town... It's a town owned golf course.Well done Wintonbury, looking forward to playing again.
One thinks they are playing at a country club! Greens and fairways were in excellent condition - players seem to "give back" to the course by taking care of it. The holes are pleasing to the eyes - lush greens, rolling hills, little ponds/lakes. GPS with all carts included in price and I recommend a cart. This municipal course know how to make the players happy. Nice bar and good food, too.
For a town course, this place is in great condition. The greens (although tough to read) were quick and rolled well. Pace of play was great - our tee time was 850am on a Thursday morning, and as a threesome finished in under 4 hours. We apparently had an online deal for $55, which is less than standard rates. For $55 with cart, this was a very good value. It's not the best layout you'll ever play, but a nice course. Go for it.
I have played golf on countless courses and several countries and I can tell you this is the finest muni I have ever played. It is a kinder/gentler Pete Dye design and is extremely well maintained.
Great course!! One of the best maintained course in the area. Very nice layout!! The only complaint is the weekend rates start on Friday. I've only seen this done down South. My weekend doesn't start until Saturday.
Great location, but you're eating in a party tent.Inside dining is fine, but not great.
A municipal course, that has a country club feel to it. For the price you pay as an out of town player, could be better. Have played other muni's for half the price and have enjoyed them much more
We played the course because of the rating. First 9 holes is like playing on an open pasture, the fairway was very nice, greens not bad considering the time of year and that they were going to punch them. The back 9 was much better, I would have preferred to play the back 9 twice due to course difficulty and scenery. Overall, it's a nice course but not worth the overall rating.
