I came here with my husband, daughter (15 months), friend, and Godson (almost 3). We accidentally came on a free admission day. We were worried because we thought the crowds would be out of control but the activities were well managed and it wasn't bad at all. We especially liked the special area for the kids 3 and younger. The kids enjoyed playing in there for a good 20 minutes, building with foam blocks and playing on the mini-gym. We also had fun playing with the chair pulleys and making airplanes out of paper cups to let them "fly" in the air tube. We all had fun in the space area pretending to be an astronaut, pretending to drive a bus, building constellations out of glow in the dark stars and even seeing a show at the planetarium. The only complaint I have is the visiting Springs, Sprockets and Pulley's exhibit/art display. While the adults found it fascinating and interesting, the kids were frustrated because they wanted to physically interact with the exhibit and weren't happy with just pushing a button. It's only a minor nit-picky complaint and we really had a great day and will be back in the future. I really love the fact that I used to come here with my parents and now I can create the same memories here with my own daughter.
We stopped by the museum and it's small but decent. We went to 2 shows, before both shows the presenter dragged on and on with the "rules" listing examples of everything he said. This type of talk may have been necessary for elementary school children but completely irritating to a room full of adults who may or may not have children. There were no unattended children in the room so the ridiculous blathering of rules really hurt his credibility because he came of less as educated and more like a control freak. That said, his presentations were good and educational once they finally got started.
The museum itself is small and needs a bit of updating. The bottom floor, where the planetarium is located, has a few interactive space exhibits. Nothing worth a return visit. The planetarium had a show which included Sesame Street characters. It was pretty good. Taught the kids some of the basics. The other two floors had other things to see, but nothing that interested my girls. There is also a small play area on the second floor.
This was the first visit for our nearly 4 yr old grandson, we've brought his cousins previously, and he had such a great time. Even though he didn't understand the scientific parts of the exhibits, he had fun with all the button pushing, hand waving etc used to generate things throughout. We also liked seeing the people using the Adventure park tree climbing which was visible out the large windows. We took his older cousins there the following week and it is amazing. Unfortunately, he got a bit scared about the planetarium show so didn't opt to see it but I know he'll enjoy it n the future. There is plenty for little kids to do and the others we saw there were having a great time too. We recommend it.
Thank you very much for your feedback! There are a couple of points we’d like to touch on in your review of the Museum. You visited The Discovery Museum on our single busiest day ever! We had over 1,600 people through the door that day for Space Day, which was helped made possible by the Connecticut Space Consortium, so thanks for being a part of it!Our Preschool Power area, which you mentioned you visited, is cleaned daily, however after your review we have made a point to inspect this area more clearly. Your note about the coloring area in the Discovery Room – the young man who was in there is a volunteer high school student who is a part of BuildOn, high school student volunteers that come in on weekends and special events throughout the year. We’re sorry to hear that your experience with this volunteer was less than exceptional and we have spoken with the coordinators for this volunteer group because of your comment. We hope that you had a chance to view our moon rock samples that were on display as well as had a chance to see the live science demonstration or one of the five planetarium shows that showed (including two brand-new shows) that day. We also had hands-on stations throughout the Museum that were staffed by Museum Educators as well as a table manned by the University of Bridgeport. The Westport Astronomical Society was also on hand for telescope and solarscope viewings outside, so we hope you had a chance to participate in that as well.We are in the process of putting together our brand-new 'Get Physical' exhibit, so we hope you'll come back soon to see it.
Lots of great programs for the local schools. Great museum to have locally. Some of the exhibits need updating, this is due partly due to the funding problems they were having, I would imagine. Cute place to visit when the kids are little. But I would not make a special trip.
My daughter went to the most wonderful birthday party at Discovery Museum...the girls had a theme party called Spa Science and they made their own peppermint lip balm...wish I was a kid! Everybody loved it, and I'm definitely going to get the Dino Hunters party for my littlest one. The staff was really kid-friendly, which was nice.
The hands on activities for the children kept their attention and seemed to attract their interest. The Planetarium presentation we observed was one of two presentations offered that day and was enjoyed by all ages.
Visited here on a Friday with my two year old. Never knew this place existed. Lots of cool stuff for kids to experience, with simple science exhibits, a floor dedicated to outer space, a planetarium with a slightly bizarre show, and a somewhat friendly staff. My daughter was thoroughly impressed and it was a good day spent indoors (away from the heat!). One minor gripe: would have been nice to have a changing table in the bathrooms on every floor, so we don't have to go on a search of all floors (would have been nice if staff would have told us this). The adventure park looks fun, but definitely for older kids. Would visit again.
Many and varied science activiites and exhibits; best for under 13 year old kids. They have a zipline now, we will be going back to try that out
I was pleasantly surprised while on an outing w/the kids at the discovery museum in Bridgeport this past weekend!! They not only have great interactive science projects (rooms) they built an absolutely "slam dunk" adventure land/obstacle course (more for adults) than children!!I wasn't prepared (with the right equipment/clothing) to partake, but I SHALL RETURN with my BUDDIES!!!A MUST GO!!ALSO found out there is a ROCK show LASER light concert at the museum on the weekends.LED ZEP, BEATLES etc. Can't WAIT!! see you there!!
Took our great grandson and he had such a good time. Loved the planetarium. Would love to go back again when he comes to visit with his younger brother.
This place is so much fun when you have kids with you. But it is pricey. See if you can find a coupon or something before you go.
Have been going there for many years, great for the kids. It is right across from Sacred Heart University which is a great look see also. They recently added zip lines and you can get deals on Groupon from time to time for 1/2 price so look for them.
They've got shows, tons of hands-on activities and lots of learning opportunities for kids (and adults). It's inexpensive and fun for everybody. They also offer Groupons pretty frequently.
