We had no idea how much there was to see here. Excellent displays, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. We'll definitely be back!
For Fairfield locals the museum is a walk back in time. Lots of fun facts and Fairfield history. We attended the train show over Christmas which was terrific. Have also attend charity and family events there. Great venue and centrally located in town.
A good museum to visit when you have a couple of hours to spare. Oriented to Fairfield history of course but also informative for the entire area. Made to be kid-friendly, but if you are not towing young 'uns, not a problem."375 Years" exhibit is informative and enjoyable, albeit a bit difficult to navigate (difficult to find if you have missed something). Museum shop available; has some lovely items. Fairfield items a bit pricey, but of course not available anywhere else.
we only visited the museum so cannot comment on the library. It was very interesting to see their comparison with how Fairfield dealt with witchcraft as opposed to Salem - nicely presented and factual. The rest of the museum took you from the 17th century of Fairfield through to modern day and again it was presented in a way to keep your attention. It was an enjoyable hour or so.
My husband and I attended the historical walking tour given by Walt Matis. It was great! Walt was very informative in a very low key personable way.He put the history of the area of the town green into stories that were not only interesting but at times funny and thought provoking. I will be looking forward to his future tours!
I actually was there longer ago. Up your dates don't allow me to go that far. We twice visited the museum at Thanksgiving. They have wonderful activities for children and my granddaughter loved making corn husk dolls and listening to a Native American storyteller. They also have attractive and informative displays as well as a lovely gift shop. At Christmas they usually have a train show. All good stuff.
I have been a fan of this establishment for years. As a teenager, I would often visit the "Fairfield Historical Society" to research topics for my classes at Roger Ludlowe High. As a college history major, I would peruse the archives there to research term papers or just to indulge my love of history. With the move to a newer building several years ago, the exhibits are so much more appealing and reach out to a much wider group than just history lovers. The exhibit on dresses over the centuries is a must see for anyone, including men. My husband even found it interesting. I am a member of this museum and I can't recommend it enough. It really is a hidden gem in Fairfield and I would recommend a visit to one and all. It is well worth the time.
The Fairfield Museum is a real gem--fascinating exhibits on the region's history, art and culture and great educational programs for kids and adults. Worth visiting throughout the year as new things are being offered all the time.
Excellent, well researched exhibits in rooms that are not too large to see everything easily.Look for upcoming exhibit on Women in the 60;s and 70's!!!! Ask yourself, "have we come a long way, baby?" to borrow from a 60's cigarette ad........Take the time to reflect on what is NOW, and what was THEN. You won't regret it.Small, but very inviting Gift Shop too! Check it out! You many want to come in sometime just to find a lovely hostess gift, or "old time" toy for a child, or even for yourself!!
I went to the museum in July 2013 to do some research on my family history. The Librarian was very helpful & friendly. I was able to find everything I needed. Also visited the Vintage clothing Exhibit which I enjoyed. The curator (Casey Lewis) did an excellent job of explaining what was in vogue during the different eras. The clothing was beautiful. This is a must for people interested in colonial heritage and for those who want to learn more. Also visited the Old Burying Ground which is near the museum.
Hidden in a "special" spot in Fairfield, this museum offers special events and presents historical items that will stir any "non-history" buffs appetite. Check them out especially when there is a special exhibit going on, you won't be disappointed.
Being from Bridgeport and now living in KY, visiting the museum was quite interesting and my grandaughter enjoyed it too.
On our way to the museum we passed a craft fair that screamed old town New England charm. Upon entering the building we were graciously welcomes and oriented for our visit. We enjoyed the small history exhibit, but wished there was more history! The Images exhibition was wonderful, but again I wanted more! We popped into the library and saw the most interesting piece of art that transitions from the original photo to now by changing your head position. After being mesmerized we checked out the photograph exhibit and treasures from the collection, which was condensed from a former popular exhibit. The staff is the library was incredibly helpful giving us an overview of Fairfield history, walking tour suggestions and a good conversation. We would go back again when they change exhibitions. Don't miss this museum.
A wonderful place to visit with family and friends. Beautiful facility, interesting exhibits, friendly staff, great gift shop.
Fairfield is a beautiful, small town, with a very interesting and old history. Go here first, then walk around the historical section of town.
