I was very interested in this house and it's history - but disappointed after visiting. We went to a Christmas presentation and the story was pretty shallow and didn't really give you a sense of the time and circumstances. The restoration on the house is a bit puzzling with preserved original areas mixed with renovated - not sure what the plan was. The volunteers are great and do a wonderful job - but the house needs a plan to present its story.
If you want to visit a home that probably hasn’t changed much in three hundred years, this is the place to check out. The “framed overhang” style of architecture is well represented here. When I arrived, there were no other people touring the property. After an enthusiastic 10-minute lecture by the staff about the home and history of Farmington, one can stroll through the rooms at whatever pace is desired. There are five rooms, lit only by random bulbs at various places in each room, so some areas are a bit dark. Note the centrally located monster of a fireplace. I highly recommend referring to the 4-page tour brochure that is available at the entrance; without this, I wouldn’t have known any details about the furnishings. After the lecture, you can see everything in 20 minutes. Take photos at will. Overall, this home is okay, but probably not worth a trip too far out of your way. From the nearby Hill-Stead Museum, it would be very easy to stop by here.
Stanley - Whitman gives visitors a chance to look inside one of the oldest houses in Farmington. They have many special events surrounding various holidays with costumed guides and actors and occasionally musical performances . There are also themed dinners and many child friendly activities.
We visited here in May and found the volunteers and staff to be enthusiastic and very helpful. The house itself is most interesting, original, and depicts a typical home from the 1700s in Farmington, Connecticut. I learned a lot and met some very nice local people. There is a nice gift shop, and the proceeds help the museum. This museum has special events and lots of educational opportunities.
