This is a very handsome lighthouse set in the beautiful grounds surrounding Branford House. It is a very pleasant walk, and one can take in the mansion as well.

The Branford House is a mansion fit for Newport, but a better view. Morton Plant even had the Ledge lighthouse customized for his view. Now UCONN Avery Point, This walk and view requires no fee, plenty of parking on weekends, and is dog frindly

This was a revisit for me. See my previous review from August 2013. It was a first visit for my friend. New London and Groton are a lighthouse lover’s dream. There are three lighthouses within a few miles of each other: New London Harbor Lighthouse, New London Harbor Lighthouse, and Avery Point Lighthouse. As a member of several lighthouse preservation nonprofits, I’m familiar with Avery Point Lighthouse Society, a nonprofit that is a chapter of American Lighthouse Foundation headquartered in Rockland, ME. This group saved this lighthouse from the wrecking ball. Competed in 1943, it was the last lighthouse constructed in the State of Connecticut. Due to World War II, it was not lighted until 1944. It is 55 feet high and octagonal in shape. It is constructed of brick. It was extinguished in 1967. Over the next 30 years, it was neglected and fell into disrepair. It was in danger of being razed by the University of Connecticut, its owner. Concerned citizens formed Avery Point Lighthouse Society Light and saved it. With serious fund-raising, it took about 6 years and $500,000 to restore the structure. It was relighted on October 15, 2006. The lighthouse is not open to the public. On this visit, we’d first stopped on Pequot Avenue in New London to view and photograph New London Ledge Lighthouse and New London Harbor Lighthouse. Then, we drove to Avery Point. After visiting and photographing Avery Point Light, we sat in our folding chairs near the sculpture park facing the Thames River and watched the ferries and other marine traffic passing New London Ledge Lighthouse and New London Harbor Lighthouse. This vantage point gives stunning views of Fishers Island Sound and the mouth of the Thames River with distant views of the two New London lighthouses. Bring your camera and binoculars. The path around the waterfront and over to the lighthouse is paved with bricks. The path is level enough to allow access by a wheelchair. This is my favorite place in Groton. It’s a place I visit every time I go to Groton. If you found this review and/or my earlier review helpful, kindly click YES below.

The whole setting at the Avery Point Light is picturesque. The ocean side walk provides great views of the ocean and the New London shoreline across the water. The park itself is nice but the lighthouse is SUPERB. It looks like it was just built yesterday and is in fabulous condition. You must take a chance to visit this light if you're in the area.P.S. Don't forget to check out the sculptures along the seaside walk. They're a nice addition to the experience!

Great views. Walk along brick walkway, cool breeze. Sit on bench under large shade tree up on point. Wow!

Avery Point is a nice place in the UCONN campus. It's right by the water, it's scenic and the little walkway to the lighthouse is really nice. Makes it a romantic place to go to and hang out by the water. It's a very beautiful and scenic place and sunsets in the evening is a must see.

Take a balmy sunny Saturday afternoon. Add in sailboats off in the distance. Add in rocky, craggy cliffs. Top off with a historic lighthouse. You now have Avery Point. Plenty of photo opportunities.

We were in the area and luckily found our way to Avery Point. Lovely sunset experience watching a submarine and tug slide into the Thames from Long Island Sound. Ferry also came in. I was wishing I had a plate-lunch dinner from Aloha Teriyaki Grill, which we passed on the way to the point, so I'll be back to enjoy Hawaiian local food and a sunset on the water just like back home on Oahu.

We went here for a wedding and reception. The grounds are beautiful, the location perfect. This property has very interesting history and has very beautiful buildings. Worth seeing.

My cousin was married at this location and it was absolutely beautiful. The inside of the mansion is as beautiful as the outside. Excellent location for a wedding. Also a great spot to just stop by and walk along the waterfront.

The grounds of the University of Connecticut are beautiful. At sunset you can get a great view of the Thames river opening up to the Long Island Sound

Set on the Avery Point penisula, this light has been a beacon of hope for many vessels searching for the river entrance to New London and Groton. Its simple architectural style sets it apart from other light along the coast, but still positions it as one of the critical landmarks fof New England naval history. On the UConn campus and among a variety of research institutes, the Light is positioned on a full lawn stretching into the water so take a walk to enjoy its simple beauty. Reaching Avery Point is a bit challenging so ask for directions.

This is one of my favorite spots in the area. It sits at the mouth of the Thames River as it spills into the Long Island Sound, part of the University of Connecticut. Avery Point is a beautiful campus that is home to the Avery Point Light. The Morton Plant Mansion sits right next to it and is also gorgeous. Go for a walk, read a book, take a nap, listen to the ocean, bring a picnic or just sit and take it all in. Often you see sailboats in the warmer weather and every now and then you will catch a submarine heading out or coming back from it's long journey. This is a must see if you visit the area to get a real feel of what the area is all about.

The Avery Point Lighthouse itself is not much to look at, but the walk around the point is a very nice one. Bring your binoculars to get a good look at the New London Ledge and Harbor lighthouses. Binoculars also help for birding - we saw Brant Geese, a small hawk and some Common Loons off in the distance.

Beautiful place! The lighthouse itself isn't too big, but still nice. Nice place to go for a walk along the brick path that they have there. If you enjoy water, lighthouses, sailboats, and sunsets this is a good place for all that :) There's even a mansion on sight!
