We arrived too late to explore the visitor center, although looking through the windows it appeared very attractive. A beautiful spot, especially with the sun setting over the salt marsh. A short boardwalk to the other side of the property brought us to a peaceful beach. Just lovely.
I'd like to second what other reviewers have mentioned--the outside observation deck is not to be missed! It offers stunning views of the marsh beyond; we were there in the winter when everything was iced over, and it was just incredible.Inside there's the typical collection of rescued wildlife and even a small gift shop, which I don't often see at nature centers. Outside on the beach, we were told that some snowy owls had been passing through--several visitors even approached us to ask if we'd seen any, but we weren't so lucky. Maybe next time!
Supported by the Audubon, located at the mouth of the Housatonic River and Long Island Sound offers a primary stopping point for migrating and resident birds. The Long Island Sound side gets all the shore birds including the endangered piping plovers. The Housatonic Side gets river/marsh birds including a pair of returning Osprey who nest on a platform within view of the center. The center offers many scopes to view the birds visiting the marsh/river side. Classes are offered for children and adults. A little out of the way, traveling through a residential area to get to the "point" but so worth it.
Viewing birds outside and learning about them inside is the essence of the Coastal Center. Be sure to walk up all the outside stairs to the rooftop to see both Stratford, the Housatonic River, several bridges, and the marshes. Spend time at the viewing spots at the marshes and take the little walkway to the sound.
