The very attractive Hale Schoolhouse in downtown New London is truly a place all school children should visit. Interactivity and a recently remodeled schoolhouse give one the view of how it was... and that Nathan Hale once taught under this roof before running off to the American Revolution. Helpful guides. Please make a donation to support a good cause is how this place stays open!
The schoolhouse was built in 1773, and patriot Nathan Hale taught here in 1774 and 1775 before he enlisted to fight in the Revolutionary War. At the time, it was called the Union Grammar School. It was used as a school into the 1800s and began to be used as a private home in 1830. It was purchased by the current owners, the Connecticut Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, in 1901. The building has been moved multiple times during its history, and is currently two blocks from its original location. The building should have been open during the time we were there, according to the hours posted on it, but it wasn’t. We had to content ourselves with reading the historic marker and looking in the windows.
