I just love the Scoville Library to pieces. The building itself is just more beautiful than words can ever express. The librarians are so helpful and friendly and are always willing to answer your questions. Such a great asset to our little town!
Excellent selection and very helpful staff The e library for Kindle is a welcome resource. salisbury had progably the first public library in the colonies
I grew up here during the summers in Salisbury, CT and a weekly trip to this library was always a special event. Noted as the first public free library in the United States, it might not be as big as the large city libraries that you are accustomed too, but the selection of latest books, periodicals, and newspaper is enough to require more reading time than you would have available. Local history is a strength as is the DVD collection. The atmosphere is comfortable and inviting (don't miss the small architectural sculpture over the fireplace gifted to the library from "the" Salisbury Cathedral in England). The staff is always warm, friendly, and helpful. They have a community room offering lectures throughout the year.
Not just a library but a community center with many varied and interesting programs
This place was a surprising and delightful find. A local directed us to this library as a place for Internet access but we were stunned with what we encountered. The story of the library and its fascinating building dates back to the early 1800s. It is a charming place to visit. The red bookshelves hugging interesting architecture had us wishing we could spend more time here. There is even a plaque on the wall donated by Salisbury Cathedral. The lady behind the desk was only too happy to talk about the history of the library and we were only too happy to drop a donation into the loan/donation box. When it is too easy to be directed to tourist activities alone, this place offered a glimpse of living in this area. On a rainy day, visiting this place put a smile on our face.
