When in Sharon it is well worth a trip to the Sharon Audubon Centre. There are excellent well maintained trails, some of which are open to you and your dog. It is very educational and there is a small museum with live and stuffed animals.Well recommended.
I am a native of Sharon, attended school programs as a youth, and know most all the workers at the Audubon. Great folks at a great center. If you have the time, and want to learn and experience the grounds and all it has to offer....GO!
Lovely grounds and trails. Kids will like the raptors on display. The ponds with their expanses of lily pads are beautiful on a summer evening.
We attend their special activity weekend every year with our Grandkids and it is well worth the ride!
There are nice trails to walk on. There are some trails you can bring your dog on. They have falcons, vultures, owls, bald eagle on display. The people working there were very helpful. It was worth the trip.
Bird Sanctuary, charming old mill with waterfall, Indoor exhibits, gift shop, beautiful trails, enchanting woods with stream, views of ponds, friendly staff. Year 'round open and accessable. Wonderful programs. Great Camp for Children. Summer and Fall Festivals not to be missed
The museum is a little out of date, but the trails and knowledge available make this an amazing place. Don't pass up the chance to walk around this location, but make sure that you bring your cameras and bug spray.
The scenery is great. You can get a guide and many special tours are offered. Great place for kids of all ages to learn.
I grew up in CT and until recently, had never spent time in the northwest corner. I've been missing out. There is so much more beauty in this corner of the state than in the rest of the state! Visiting Sharon Audubon Center is a good way to spend a portion of a day seeing what New England is all about really. Whether you just stop in the Nature Center or visit the aviaries or walk on the trails, its a good break from the rest of your life. And you learn a lot too! In the nature center, there are several critters (doves, crow, saw-whet owl, turtles, snakes, tarantulas, walking sticks, hissing cockroaches) and a newly redone Aquatic Room downstairs with a 175 gallon saltwater tank and new kids stuff to do down there. There is a nature store inside too. Outside, there are the raptor aviaries, with several birds (great horned owls, barred owls, screech owls, merlin, red-tailed hawk, bald eagle, vultures, kestral, peregrine falcon, etc.). Taking the trails can be very peaceful and you can visit the two ponds. I went on one of the trails the other day (a loop including both ponds) and I saw garter snakes, a water snake, canada geese, wood ducks, frogs, newts, turkeys, and a barred owl (cool find!). So, keep your eyes open! Right now its fall and the leaves are very pretty. I highly recommend stopping into the Sharon Audubon Center and checking it out. (and bring your kids/grandkids too!)
