Well maintained area and very scenic views, had good amenities and great play ground for kids or just relaxing view of the sound and atlantic ocean
The beach has come a long way years. Recently they added some more sand, making it look more like a beach. There is a nice sidewalk, cute little pavilion and a skate park. There are on sight bathrooms and a playground for children which is well kept. I am not sure about a concession sand, though there is one. This is because I have run a few road races and I am there to early in the morning for it to possible open up. Otherwise, this is a great little beach with ample room to lay out, build some sand castles and just have some good old fashion beach fun. Oh and you have to be Stratford Resident with a sticker to get in, otherwise you have to pay. I don't think it is to much.
Went to the beach on Sunday afternoon. Around 4 pm decided to use the Ladies room. I couldn't believe how clean it was. There was a lady riding around on a golf cart and she kept checking the bathrooms. She did a GREAT job. With all the kids running in and out of the bathrooms she had a job to do. On the other hand two weeks in a row they have had a band called Crunch playing in the afternoon and they are terrible. Couldn't stand the music they were playing.
Short Beach is a resident only beach containing picnic areas, pavillions, a playground, a par 3 golf course, softball fields, and courts for basketball, tennis, and beach volleyball. A concession stand is located on the beach with entertainment on the weekends.Beach Stickers for non-residents are $150/season or $20/day for Short Beach.
This is a well maintained beach with lifeguards, rest rooms, food concession (haven't tried), showers, volleyball nets, a playground. At low tide, it's shallow for a great distance--good for kids, not for adults. At high tide it drops off more quickly, so I'd consider swimming. Non-swimming kids would have to be watched, but there was no wave action when we were there. Nice place.
All I can say is we call it "Dirt Beach" because the sand is like sitting in dirt. And if you go in the water watch out for the muck! The skate park is a joke and the playground isn't much better. The rest room facilities were FILTHY !!!If you are looking for a nice beach in the area drive another 15 minutes down the road to Walnut Beach in Milford.
Short Beach is a very pleasant place to be outdoors, and there are good amenities - snack bar, clean bathrooms, pretty setting, often music in the summer, plenty of parking and a short walk from the parking lot to the beach. There could be more trash cans to help visitors clean up, but for the most part it has always been pretty clean and the sand is well maintained. There is no shade, so parents of small children should be sure to bring beach tents or umbrellas. It's never been very crowded when we've been, so there are plenty of options to be closer to or farther from the water, your preference.
Nice setting. Just enough of a challenge. Great recreational area. Redone after :"Sandy". Low impact exercise.
When I moved to Stratford, about 28 years ago, I was delighted over the idea of being within minutes of the beach. Sad to say, this beach is a disgrace. The horrible sand, at its best, gets raked over by a machine which crushes it's shells, along with the cigarette butts, into the sand and redistributes it. Even after it was "redone" with a new parking lot and skate park, it is like putting earrings on a pig. The "playground" was a place I dared to bring my kids to only a handful of times when they were young. The deciding factor to NOT bring them anymore was when a toddler was instructed by his mom to run to the top of the sand dune, in full view of everyone, and pull down his pants to defecate. He then pulled his trunks up (no wiping) and proceeded to go on his merry way with his clan on the same swing set as the other kids. Need I say more?
ILove Going Over To Short Beach So Peaceful And Beautiful.Sometimes I Just Drive There Sit And Read For Hours. Most Of All I Feel Safe Where I Go There.HighlyRecommended.
Short beach has a lot of various things to do. Unlike your usual at an average beach there are tennis courts, volleyball nets, skate park, kids playground, small golf course, basketball courts, a couple of pavilions, several places to BBQ. What is a little lacking is the sound, since the beach is at the delta of the river not on the sound. This makes it very shallow during low tide and no waves even on a windy day. Other than this it is a good place to do different things with friends and family. It gets crowded on holiday weekends. There's plenty of parking and it is free if you are a Stratford resident.
One of our very favorite places to go in ct. Our family loves the beach and short beach has something for everyone. We can explore, dig and have a wonderful time. Kids love the playground and the skate park. Facilities are new and clean which is a real great for me since beach bathrooms are usually gross and disgusting. We rotate going to short beach with walnut beach in milford as all of the ct beaches have something different to offer! We also really enjoyed walking out to the "castle".
I am a Stratford resident, maybe one mile from short beach. I have been coming here my whole life. It has a nice golf course nice pavilions, good food, but the garbage is ridiculousI saw people this morning picking up garbage which helped, but at the far side of the beach where not as many people go it is disgusting. There is garbage everywhere, especially at the far end, the more private side. It gets cleaned up often, but it just becomes dirty again. To come here with a family, it's nice, really nice, looking out at the water. The children have a playground, there is a closed mini-golf course aswell that im not sure they plan on re-opening. The water is brown at close view, but that's because of the marshy area around it and the sand. It's beautiful looking out at in the morning. If coming here to hang out at a nice beach, I recommend Seaside Park in Bridgeport, but it's nice here aswell.Have fun!
Stratford has one of the longest public shorelines in CT.Short Beach is a beautiful portion of this. From a natural beach to it's quiet inlets it is a beautiful escape any time of the year. There are also activities like tennis, golf, skate boarding, and many events like Blues on the Beach!
I'm surprised by how few people know about Short Beach. (Maybe I should keep this secret to myself?) Perfect for families, there's a playground, a mini-golf course, restrooms and a snack bar and a slighly rocky beach that's great for kids... you can wade out a loooonnnnggg way at low tide and still be only waist-high. I am a Stratford resident, so I don't pay for Short Beach access... I think non-residents pay $10?
