Great shop. Spent a couple of hours with them and had a blast. I learned a lot and will definitely go back. Lorenzo
Kandu beads has always been eye candy for crafters, artists, etc. I didn't know you could find beads in such variety before. Also I've attended one class before with Deb and Alicia(?) and both were very helpful. I learned a great deal and walked away with something I could be proud of.I guess that means I Kandid!
The shop is great (beautiful beads and jewelry)! The class......not so much. Our 'teacher' Alicia (?) was nice enough, however, she continuously left the classroom to attend to 'other' business in the shop. We were left to fend for ourselves countless times which became more than frustrating. Having never done this before we expected our teacher to both TEACH and HELP us in our jewelry making adventure - this didn't happen. It felt as though we were a thorn in her side or as if we were an annoying younger sibling she just didn't want to deal with. I would recommend to anyone teaching a class, be present, be attentive and be there for your students.
We knew this was going to be a great bead shop before we went. We'd been following Kandu Beads online for a couple years, even before it was a shop with normal hours. But the shop is a wonderful destination - a place to make the goal of your day trip, especially if you love beads or jewelry art. It's located in a brick former factory complex , so there's plenty of space. In fact, there is a honeycomb of rooms to explore, brimming with interesting furniture, artifacts, art and stringable stuff. Your patient significant other will have a chair in the studio room if need be.If you've checked out Kandu Beads on Etsy (and you SHOULD!) you'll expect lots of great strands of truly unusual stones at great prices. There are walls full, so you will be overwhelmed at first. Even better, there are some of the most gorgeous trade beads I've seen on one place at one time, and I'm sure I didn't see them all on my first visit. We only spent about an hour and a half there, and there was a lot to take in.This is not a "normal" bead store filled with the trash of everyday 21st century costume jewelry. This is a little museum of goodies for those who love beads, their lore, and their spiritual connection to ancestral power wear. If you don't already feel that, go to Kandu, talk and listen and look, and you may get it.The owner of Kandu and her adorable minions have created a space of beauty and energy, not to mention a fabulous shopping experience. Let me tell you: I went looking and hoping for some unusual stuff and I found plenty of it! Quirky little brass bells, Nepalese prayer beads, mummy beads, unpolished stone beads (garnet, fluorite, quartz, beryl, you name it!), vulcanite heishi, crystal points, an ample supply of pearls. Many interesting pendants, from artisan polymer and PMC treasures to gold-dipped druzy and Tibetan pieces.Let me stress again: if you know and love beads, from the ancient (old African stone, prayer beads, clay) to the modern electroplated alien-looking quatrz points, you will be wowed at this collection. If you don't know and love beads, but are just getting started, there is plenty to love and learn about. Simple gemstone strands, VERY reasonably priced, abound. The shop is a reflection of the fantastic taste and imagination of the owner and her marvelous staff - colorful, textured, imaginative and just full enough to seem like a wizard's workshop. This is the den of someone who loves creating and has graciously invited us along to join her.
A great place for beautiful beads and other unusual finds. Definitely miles above a "craft" store, the owner and staff are true artists. Great place for inspiration, terrific technical help, and conversation. Classes go beyond beading to metalwork. You won't be visiting just once!
This is truly the greatest bead store I've ever been in (and I've been in a lot!). I found it after buying some beads online, and when I went there the selection was amazing, definitely not your average craft store. The staff was so knowledgeable and friendly, and I saw beads there I had never seen anywhere else. They run some great classes, and have a beautiful boutique of handmade jewelry. All in all, really a unique and fun place, I highly recommend it!
