If in the neighborhood (Exit 89 on Rte. 95 in VA), this little brewery offers a great selection of beers in a setting that is unusual to say the least. Where else can you bring in a snack or a sandwich and wash it down with a delicious brew made right on the premises. Truly a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with family and friends!
We stopped in last weekend for a tasting before heading out to dinner with friends. We ended up staying until the place closed. The staff were extremely friendly and the beer is excellent. The night was nice enough to hang outside on the patio for a bit with heat lamps. We then ventured back inside and began playing darts. There are about 5 dart boards in a side room. We really enjoyed this. It was such a different atmosphere than your typical bar. People, staff and patrons, were all friendly and we really had a great time. We even ordered dinner from a food truck out front and tried something new- Chicken and Waffles- we are huge fans now :) Definitely worth checking out this place. We cant wait to go back when the weather gets nicer, but until then, there is plenty of space inside.
Chris & Phil Ray and head brewer Mike have outdone themselves. COTU Brewery has the best craft beers this side of the Mississippi! They are right oFF exit 89 off rte 95. Stop in and have a few, I suggest either chin music or main st. Can't go wrong with any of them!
This is a great place to enjoy some wonderful beers and fun atmosphere. There's no food inside, but usually there is at least one food truck in the outdoor food court. A new stamped concrete patio and wooden picnic tables make for a great place to enjoy some quality local beers, great live music and fun company. Worth a visit off the Lewistown Rd exit at mile 89 on I-95 north of Richmond.
We stayed at the campground across the street. We were warmly greeted upon entering the brewery. Sampled the available beers and enjoyed our visit. It would be five stars if we could have had food with our brews. There were supposed to be food trucks there on another night but we were there and the trucks never showed up. It is worth a visit and we will return when we visit the area.
A nice selection of good beers, in a comfortable atmosphere, where you can actually hear yourself and others.
New and very clean, Center of the Universe has indoor and outdoor seating, comfy couches, board and other games - it's a thoroughly pleasant place to try some tasty beer and hang out with friends. Because it's so new, it doesn't have some of the dark ambiance and character of some breweries I've been to, but there is a lot to be said for crispness, natural light, and cleanliness. The beers are good, though lacking in choices (at least currently) for those of us who prefer darker stouts, porters, etc. Staff members were friendly and knowledgeable. It was nice to choose from flights, glasses, growlers - basically any way you want it. We are local and will definitely be back again. Could benefit from offering food, even if only snacks.
Was in the area visiting friends and decided to stop by after reading reviews online. Located in an industrial park and could tell the building right away with the picnic tables outside and the hops growing on the trellis. New place, very clean and plenty of comfy seats. You can also sit at the bar and try a flight. Growlers are also available. There was a food truck out back for take out if you wanted a bite to eat. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Sampled all the beer and liked all of them. Will return next time in town.
Stopped in for a sampler of their beers. We were there for a cask night of their Pocahoptas. They have a small selection ranging from Kolsch and Pilsners to IPA's. I found that for me personally I liked the Pocahoptas best. The brewery has a nice patio outside and inside is very open with couches and lounge chairs. There is also a back room complete with Cornhole. It was a fun place to come and check out beers, and you can say you've been to the "Center of the Universe!"
We stopped by last Saturday after hearing about this place from a friend. The place was new and clean! It just opened in November 2012. We selected the flight of beers to try everything even though IPAs are our favorites. The Richard and PocaHOPtas were our favs but we liked them all. You can buy some of them in the bottle. They have tshirts and various pint glasses for sale also. After the flight we also purchased a pint. A food truck visits the parking lot at scheduled times too. A great place to visit and we will be back.
What a fun day we had visiting this new brewery. We tasted all of their locally brewed beer and it was all very good, however, our favorite was The Richard, which is a deliciously hoppy IPA. The staff is very friendly and very knowledgable about all of the beer. They sell a flight so that you can taste each beer, or you can get a pint, or really treat yourself and take a growler of delicious fresh beer home to enjoy. We did all three!!! They even have a food truck that comes so that you can get a bite to eat while enjoying the yummy beer that they serve!!! If you're in Ashland and you like a good IPA or Kolsch, make a point to stop and try the new brews. It's well worth the time.
Overall, a great place to grab a beer and try some local brews. This is a brewery that serves their own beer and sells growlers (1/2 gallon jugs of beer to take home.) The beer tastes good and is reasonably priced. I think people who aren't big beer fans would even like their less hoppy brews. If you can't decide, you can order a flight of beers on draft for like $5 (I don't know if this changes with the number of beers on draft.) There was a good amount of room inside and it wasn't too loud - you could easily carry on a conversation. There are lots of tables to sit at and even board games. I even enjoyed the art on the walls. Food: None. But, I think you could order food there if you wanted to. They had some pamphlets. I would call ahead of time if eating there is a priority.I appreciated that the bartenders were knowledgeable and willing to answer a few questions.Reason this place almost got 4 stars instead of 5.-Variety: They had 4 different beers on draft when I visited - pale ale, IPA, kolsch, and an alt . I thought they all tasted great, but the first two tasted somewhat similar and I would have loved to see the addition of a stout, porter, wheat, or lager.-Website: Should have some more information on food options and events. If there aren't any events, this should probably change.
