This is a very neat lighthouse that has been recently restored but I would highly reccomend dousing yourself in bug spray or you will be eaten alive.
Although it was a cloudy day, we still had a good panoramic view of the two islands. We could also see the ponies in the marsh area. There are 175 steps, it's 150 feet tall and fee is $5.00
This climb isn't for the weak of heart, lung or leg ... but it is well worth the effort! The lighthouse has been lovingly restored and climbers can step out onto a 360* balcony for breathtaking views of Assateague Beach and the town of Chincoteague! The small fee charged is used to maintain the property and all the staff we've encountered work as volunteers. Definitely a work of 'heart.'
We are told that there are 175 stairs in total. Thankfully there are several areas where you can step aside and take a break. Once you are on the balcony at the top, you will get to see the panorama view of the bay area and the ocean. There is a $5 fee for each adult to get to the top.
The lighthouse is one of the several attractions of the Assateague Island/Chincoteague reserve area.It is well maintained and easily accessible by car and a short walk. Views from the top are amazingly beautiful, getting to the top can be a little bit of exercise. You will enjoy a visit to the Island if you like adventure; check the wild horses and the marsh, go to the beach and grab a bite at any of the eateries.I recommend you pack several types and generous amounts of bug repellant; the unbelievable number of mosquitoes are of incredible size and voracious appetite.
We did not go to the top but instead went for a little picnic. I enjoyed the visit. There's a fee to park and a fee to climb the lighthouse. Saw no line of visitors but I guess there sometimes is. Very nice view even from sea level of the nearby islands. Bring something to drink and maybe also to eat. Nice little place.
We stopped at this lighthouse on our way through Assateague and Chincoteague Islands, but unfortunately it was not open. It has a nice hiking trail around the base, and it has great photo opportunity from below, but it still would have been nice to be able to see it from the top.
The lighthouse is in a beautiful location. The Fresnel lens that used to be part of it is in the Island museum. (Which for some reason was staffed, listed as open, but the doors were locked - I wish I could have seen it.) The lighthouse itself was well maintained and the staff were both helpful, friendly and well informed. It had gorgeous views all the way up.
This lighthouse was old and historic and provided a great view of the island! So glad to have experienced it. What a work out to get to the top but much needed by all of us. Our only disappointment was that my mother who has problems walking, had no way of getting to the top but what do you expect for an old lighthouse. Lovely though!
We stopped over for a night on Chincoteague on our way to the beach and impulsively decided to make a stop at the Assateague Lighthouse. It was lovely. If it is your only reason for visiting Assateague park, expect to pay the $8 park entrance fee and $5 per adult and $3 per child to climb the light house. It was a quarter mile walk from the parking lot, partially uphill, but nothing strenuous (there are handicap alternatives). We waited in a short line for visitors to come down before we made the trek. My 5 year old loved counting the many steps to the top, and we all enjoyed the view of the surrounding islands and waterways. As another reviewer mentioned, there isn't a lot of information posted about the lighthouse or its history: I would have appreciated a bit more. It was in very nice shape, looking newly painted and renovated. All in all it was a great counterpoint to the nature boat ride we took earlier in the day that showed us the lay of the land from the water. I recommend it, but bring your own water!
The lighthouse has recently been restored and is in great condition. The view from the top is spectacular; you can see from the mainland across the bay to Chincoteague, then across Assateague Bay to the refuge, and then ocean on the far side. It would be nice if there was more informational material available, either in the entrance or on the landings.
It was closed for a while but recently reopened. It's been re-painted and it's fun to 'see forever' from the top. Steps are a little difficult ...after all -- it's a lighthouse!
The view from the top is very nice. The hike to the lighthouse from the parking area is a very short one. Great to see the lighthouse has been repainted. The lighthouse is a wonderful reminder of days gone by.
Great lighthouse, well maintained, great staff, great view at top but only a port-a-potty that is only cleaned once a week. Hike to lighthouse is very short, flat and easy.
Even if you don't climb to the top, snap some photos of this historic lighthouse! As an avid fan of lighthouses, I enjoyed seeing this one, and learning about the history of the lighthouse and the Island!!
