I was actually disappointed. The campground was great. We had a great time. However the lake water was low. It was off season so we wouldn't have gone swimming but that wouldn't have been possible anyway. Just check about activities that are open before you go. Also check water level if you are interested in swimming. Could be great for boaters and fishing but I don't know.
we like to hike and enjoyed the scenery very much. the trail we took was moderate to difficult. No one else was in the park that we could tell. my husband picks the trails. serene and beautiful.
This place is certainly not rustic. There's some decent scenery, but the first order of business really is boats here. Campgrounds were just places to park your butt when you weren't on your boat. But, there were a select few really nice sites overlooking the water. RESERVE to get one of these. Actually, just reserve anyway. When we got there on a Friday afternoon, there were only 5 spots left in the whole place. There are also some nice walk in sites (but even these fill up).Good place to play around on your boat, and we had fun paddling a kayak around. But all the boat motors and generators mean you won't really feel like you escaped into the wilderness.
Very easy to get to, this National Forest is worth a visit. They have fishing, boating, swimming and camping. It is a National Forest so if you like the outdoors, you will love this place. Wildlife everywhere. We came up from Clifton Forge for the day and enjoyed the visit. General store has a small variety of goods including expensive gasoline. Lots of boats are stored here and you can spend an enjoyable day in the outdoors. We saw a bear crossing the road which is always fun. We don't get that opportunity very often but this lake is fairly remote and your wildlife sightings are higher than normal. You can visit the dam and get an up close view of the wall.
We visit this area often. It's worth the trip if you want a beach feel and are in the area. There is a place to swim and bath houses. Also the have boat parking and ramp. You will need to bring towels, snacks and drinks . An umbrella also because shade is very limited.
I visited the area in late August. The weather was rather comfortable, but I did go early In the morning. No one was out and I had the mountain lake to myself so to speak. It was a quick trip but a rather beautiful spot to see.
Went from Millboro Springs to Lake Moomaw which is about an hour's drive. One time we went several years ago, hadn't had much rain during the year and the lake was all dried up. This time, however, lake was beautiful with different colors. Sandy beach had recently been raked and was very clean. When we go back next year, will take umbrellas, chairs, floats for the lake and intend to spend the whole day there. I personally didn't go in one of the bathrooms but husband said it was reasonably clean. Nice to have outdoor showers to rinse sand off before getting back in the car. Picnic area was clean and shady.
We spend most of our summers camping in the Western United States so a camping trip in Virginia was very different for us. The campground loop we stayed in is very well maintained and had 4 free showers and flush toilets. If you were a camper you didn't have to pay the $5 fee at the beach, which also had free showers. Anyone that camps out West knows how rare showers are and that you have to go to town and pay for them. That alone made Lake Moomaw a bargain. There was a power outage while we were there and the staff worked very hard to lessen that inconvenience. The scenery at the lake was lovely and we enjoyed our time in Western Virginia.
Went to have a nice BBQ with my husband after spending time at lake douthat ..The Bathrooms were Nasty and not kept up very well....Is was like a dead zone and they Charge you $5 Just to have to park.........I heard there was a hole nothing side to the place on bath county but decided not to go visit......Hoping they fix it up a little more Beautiful place but needs TLC for sure........
Nice weather, great time with family and friends.... The boat rental was fun even though the boat stalled 3 times...... but the 2 people in charge that made a point of "visiting" our camp site in an effort to collect $40 that was credited to our boating fees as a curtesy OFFERED by the rental attendant were inconsiderate, rude and very unprofessional to say the least!
this was our first trip to lake moomaw and it was the best campground yet and we do a lot of camping everything from the camp host to the bath house was very nice pet friendly everyone there had pets we plan on going back with our 3 yr old grandson and 11 week old puppy acess to it was simple off 64 take the staton exit to 39 he had kayacks we were able to get to the water from our very own campsite small path to the water it was awsome cant wait to get back there this time we plan on bringing family members
We spent some time at Lake Moomaw on a recent weekend trip to the VA mountains. The lake itself is very nice, and the facilities are well-kept and clean. As another reviewer mentioned, it is not the easiest lake to find, but the drives are very scenic, as well. So, as long as you are not in a rush, locating the lake can be a part of the relaxing trip. We chose to picnic near one of the swim areas because most of the picnic areas were offset from the lake, with no views of the lake. However, there are picnic tables right next to the lake near the marina, which we discovered on a second trip to the lake after our picnic. We saw deer several times while we were driving around the lake, as well as red squirrel and chipmunks. This is a very lovely lake in the mountains, and is a great option for taking in the mountain views without having to hike. Many of the parking areas to access the picnic and swim areas are honor pay.
It's a great place for boating, though I wouldn't recommend swimming there
This is a very nice lake to visit. Good fishing and places to swim and picnic. A little out of the way but worth the drive.
Our gps was useless in the mountains, so bring a good map. Otherwise you're not going to have an easy time finding the large lake. It was a reconnaissance trip so we were just looking to picnic and swim somewhere. This place was amazing! Mountains all around the lake, and clean clear water, God's country indeed! We saw one boat the whole time we were there, and were the only people there for most of the time. Small swimming area, probably better for a boat (not a rowboat!) and some fishing. Great place to relax! Clean showers and restrooms too. Make sure to bring some food and water, nothing's around otherwise.
