Grew up here and it's a great and beautiful sight to see the water fall has a large swimming hole before with a rope swing it's very nice to see

Falling Spring Falls is a beautiful 80-foot waterfall right off the highway just north of Covington. We've stopped here a couple times on the way up to Snowshoe, WV. You can see the waterfall from the road, so this is a great little excursion if you're in the Covington area. There is a small parking area on the side of the highway with a picnic area and an overlook to view the falls. For the more adventurous, it's possible to climb down to the base for an up-close view of the falls. Past the picnic area, a small path leads towards the top of the waterfall and then down to the base. It's a steep climb down the rocks so you use extreme caution. The source of the water is a hot spring, so the water is always unseasonably warm. When it's really cold, there might be some icicles, but I don't think it ever freezes. In the summer months, people can play around the base of the waterfall or go swimming in the pools above the waterfall. There's even a rope swing up here. However, be very careful swimming near the top of the waterfall not to get swept over.

Right off main road and parking. Nice drive up from the town and some scenic views on way. Great for pictures also as you can stand right near top or from street.

This is a must stop in the area. I had a hard time finding it and ended up on the back trails of a park before asking for directions. so make sure you know where you are going. It is suck an amazing view from the overlook that pictures will not do for the experience of standing there.

It took me a while to figure out the exact location. Probably, it just me.Anyone going from the downtown Convington, VA.... Keep going up on Route 220 - waterfall will be on your left. There is a small parking lot and you can't miss it. There are also couple of overlooks on your way up - worth a stop I guess.Waterfall overlook is less than 100 feet from the parking lot. It's good that they have cleared the trees and gave us a clear view of waterfall. I was hoping to go down the trail but they have fixed the broken fence it is now more difficult to across and down by the side of the fence. Worth spending half an hour or so. This is scenic waterfall with parking nearby and cement walking trail to the overlook a short distance away from the parking lot. This is a beautiful waterfall with trails to the top pool and to the creek below at the lower pool. It was getting dark so we didn't venture behind the waterfall to the cave. From the looks of the trail, many people have gone in there. From the overlook you also have a beautiful mountain view. There was a lot of gorgeous fall leaf color the day we were there. If you like nature, this is a must see. It's on a winding curving road but it's worth the drive to get there due to the beautiful vistas along the way. Watch out for the logging trucks that also use this 2 lane blacktop road.

There are certainly more spectacular falls in this world, but it was worth a stop. We did find a wonderful little drive back down into the valley on a road very reminiscent of some we've been on in the Eifel region of Germany. Ask a local to point you to the airport that's atop the mountain near the falls - it's a neat driving experience, but make sure your brakes are up to it..

Excellent place to visit. If you are driving through there just park your vehicle and walk just 30steps to the overlook beside the road and enjoy the fantastic view of the falls as well as the other mountains surrounded the falls.But my suggestion is if you have enough time like 1hour, please go to down of the fall.Because that view is more precious which you won't find from overlook above in fact from overlook above you wouldn't be able to guess about its height or how long it is! To go down to the fall,enter through the broken/open fence beside the parking spot. No need to be scared, because its not dangerous, people often use this way to go down of the falls, I found that.Use that way and go forward, you will find a pond that made the falls. In that way you will reach the upper starting place of the fall.Now you have to go left and will find big stones that looks terrific, but trust me its not that difficult to go downward.In fact you will realize its really very easy way, those stones are placed like stairs.Within less than 10minitues you will reach the down part and enjoy the amazing view.

Again, one of the excellent things to see and or do while in the mounatins of Virginia. I hadn't been back to the falls since 2007. This time I brought my daughter and she was totally thrilled. We actually went down to the falls and experienced them up close and personal. Several of the local college students and local residents were down in the water. It is refreshingly cool or cold to some. We took our bathing suits and changed near an area on the right side as you're facing the falls that lends some privacy. You can trek down to the falls two different ways and they're both steep with plenty of rocks. The rocks by the falls weren't slippery as I thought they might be and that was due to the mineral deposits. My daughter was a little chilly but the weather was unseasonably cool for August. I don't think the temps got out of the 70's the whole time we were there and it's typically hot and muggy. Don't pass this trek up or stop and view it from the road above.

Beautiful waterfall. love it. Reminds me of my childhood since I grew up not far from there. Only make sure your radiator is in good shape before taking the trek.

My first time ever seeing a natural waterfall (not man made) I loved every second of it. I had my small daughter with me so I didn't get to hike to the bottom. I did walk down the trail to the top of the waterfall. It's just an amazing scenery pictures don't give it justice at all!

Falling Springs is not only one of the most fabulous waterfalls in Virginia ~ it's the only one Thomas Jefferson noted in his "Notes on the State of Virginia." At an 80ft drop that spreads out at least half that at times, this is a must see for any waterfall lover. There is a lovely overlook, and if you circle around you will find trails that take you to the top pool, the creek and the lower pools at the bottom. In summer you'll find locals playing and swimming in the pools. I don't know that it is precisely acceptable (read legal) to go to the bottom but the locals seem to think it is. Once there check out the cave and trail behind the curtain. Perfection! I visit at least once every couple of months or so to catch it during each season. At just a few miles above Covington, and on the way to the Homestead Resort, Hot Springs and the Jefferson Baths, this is an easy detour ~ indeed it's on the road ~ for anyone.

A beauty of a waterfall, easy to get to and you don't have to hike anywhere to see it.Just park the car and walk 30 steps. Take 15 mins to stop by and see this beauty.

Beautiful waterfall with views of the mountains in the background. We can't wait to see this in the Fall when the leaves change color. If your headed North on route 220 this will be on your left hand side. The parking lot isn't very large. Holds maybe a dozen or so cars. No parking for large vehicles such as large RV's though. Unlike some other waterfalls I've been to though you don't have to walk very far to see it and it doesn't involve hiking over rough terrain. Path to falls after parking is on your left and is paved. Wide enough for a person in a wheelchair easily I would think. I meant to take a couple of pictures of the path and retaining wall but forgot, sorry. Maybe I can add them in a return trip in the Fall. If you have small children you will want to keep a hand on them as the only thing between you and a long fall over the side is a two foot stone wall. Once your at the end of the path though your treated to a nice view of the waterfall and in mountains in the background.If heading North on route 220 to see Falling Springs Waterfall. Do Not turn off of route 220 and onto route 687 thinking you are going to get to the falls. There is a sign telling you to turn off 220 and onto 687 for Falling Springs, but it does not take you to the falls. The falls are right off of route 220 and are at least a couple miles past this road.They say you can see the falls from the road. I can see where this waterfall can be seen if driving a tall enough vehicle (mini van or pick-up truck) and at the right time of year (Fall/Winter), and headed North. I'm not too sure about South though as you would be in a curve and I myself didn't dare look. The way the road is and the speeds people travel on it, I wouldn't go too slow to try catching a glimpse of it. Best to just pull off in the parking lot and view it.There are no bathrooms here. There is an information board telling you about the waterfall and brochures on the Alleghany Highlands and Hiking Trials in the area. Seeing this from the bottom would have been wonderful also, but I didn't see any access points/trails and there are no signs posted giving such information. Usually at an attraction like this if there are hiking trails available they would have a map and distances listed. There was no such board/map here. I have seen on other reviews though were they have walked around a fence that's in the parking area and extends past it and made it to the top of the falls and also to the bottom, but I would venture a guess they were trespassing and it was not legal to do so. That fence goes out along the main road and I wouldn't think they would want you walking along the main road. That just wouldn't make sense. I also think if they didn't mind you walking out to the top of the waterfall, they would have made an entrance and a path at the parking lot. I looked into it best I could online before our trip and didn't see where you could see the falls from below. This was the first time going there myself so I can't be 100% about it, but I wouldn't risk it myself. No proper trails and no posted signs saying you could do it, to me means you shouldn't do it. Not unless you find out otherwise after calling the attraction's phone number, from some other reliable source or seeing something I possibly missed while I was there. This part of my review isn't meant to call anyone out or bust anyone's butt over this. I just think it may be a bit deceiving when you read someone's review thinking you can do something when you get there and then find out it's not what you thought at all. To some they might think they have the opportunity to see the falls from more than one viewing point when I don't think they do. Just remember, best thing to do is research and use common sense. I don't know if the phone number I've added as an attraction # is current. I got it off the Va. is for Lovers web site and it was last updated in 2011.Only reason I gave it a 4 out of 5 was because of the lack of trails to other viewing areas. If there was another way to view this it would be great and I would have given it 5 out of 5.Natural beauty you don't have to pay to see. Can't beat that.

The waterfall, which can be seen from the road is beautiful. If you're facing the waterfall and walk to the right of the fencing you can take a path to the top of the waterfall. I would be hesitant to take small children because there are no fences to keep them safe. I went at the beginning of May was there was a lot of woodland phlox in bloom. I also saw Dutchman's breeches, waterleaf, bladdernut, bottlebrush buckeye, Solomon's seal and trilliums to name a few. I hope to visit this site again over the course of the year.
