Beautiful place. Lots of Civil War history. Staff was very nice. A delightful, unexpected surprise! Would definitely visit again.
This is one of the most beautiful museum that I have been in. I love the history behind the home. I wish it was just a place where it tells about history and not fine arts. I think the history behind it is more important than the fine arts but that is just my opinion. I wish they would stop fighting over the removal of the flag. The flag should stay standing it does not mean what people think it means. It is history
What a fascinating museum. I learned so much about the city's history & the Civil War!There had excellent art exhibitions too. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you're interested in history!
WE got there lat in the day and they had an event going on. They offered for us to just walk through at no expense since they really couldn't give us the guided tour. Otherwise there is a fee. It was worth the tour. Very well preserved. We saw the bedroom where President Jefferson Davis stayed. The curators were very well educated about the Mansion. They gave us a lot of history about the Mansion. It was amazing to see how the well to do back in the 1800's lived.
Danville Virginia is rich in history and this is where you can find out all about those times gone by with various exhibitions and always a current artist on show. Great staff and well worth your time!
Well maintained civil war historical site-last capital of the confederacy. Must see for historians.Educational trip for youngsters. Excellent guides who are knowledgeable. Small gift shop inside. Also has a rotating art exhibit for those who are interested.
Joyce led us on a 90 minute walking tour of the fantastic age of Danville's tobacco and textile mansions. Sharing secrets of each home or church she was vivacious and entertaining. She was also able to arrange an inside the mansion tour at one home where the owner shared their restoration experiences. A must tour!
Excellent set up for information on the mansion and the work of arts. Also had a lot of information on other attractions in the area. Everyone was very friendly and helpful.
I'm a native of Danville and when I was in school, this building was used as a library. It was a pleasant suprise when I stopped by on a recent trip and saw that it was not a beautiful museum. The staff has gone to great lengths to preserve the history of Danville and the tour guide was excellent in pointing out the history of Danville. I would highly recommend a visit here when you are not rushed.
I was fascinated with millionaire's row secrets walking tour sponsored through the museum. Our tour guide was full of delightful information. It Was easy to make reservations. Our guide was helpful with a list of local cafe's. We walked about 90 minutes.
We were impressed with the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History. The Sutherlin Mansion sets a beautiful stage for history and art from the era. The Civil War memorabilia is quite impressive and the history surrounding the mansion will intrigue any Civil War buff. Antiques abound inside the lovely Italian villa architecture, well preserved for all to enjoy. You may visit using the audio tour or more personable. The Museum Curator is well versed in the history of the mansion, the Civil War, the antiques and the era. Well worth the visit!
I grew up near Danville, VA and never visited the museum for the Civil War. My husband is a Civil War buff and really enjoyed the museum. This beautiful Old mansion of Jeffrey Davis has been restored and offers an array of unusual items such as a musical machine that played a copper type of record like the record players of a modern era. It is an audio tour which provides the visitor with information and explanations of the artifacts and displays. My husband and I were very impressed and of course, the grounds were beautiful with spring flowers and tree blossoms.
My husband is a keen student of the Civil War, and he was pleased to see some items that he's never seen exhibited. The house is beautifully appointed with impecable attention to the details of the period. You'll feel as if the family and Jeff Davis have just stepped out! The audio tour is informative, and the docents can answer any questions that you might have. They accommodate group tours. Seniors only pay $4--a real bargain. Parking is in the rear, and you enter in back. Take time to drive around the area to see some of the beautiful old homes.
I grew up near Danville, so I am familiar with earlier versions of this building and its historical significance. Until our recent visit, however, I had not seen its development or experienced the high level of presentation. The introductory film and the audio tour compare favorably with the best in this country and beyond. Wall signage enhances the experience. Who would expect the friendliness of the staff?Any serious student of American history would enjoy the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History. No Civil War buff should miss it as a primary source. In addition, the museum offers art galleries, a performance hall, and a Danville hall of fame - all in a splendidly restored building surrounded by lawns and gardens.
Hard to believe this home is as old as it is. It's a shame that the city of Danville added on to it back around 1930(?). When we went this past week, the tour fee is $5, and they give you a cd player with headphones for your tour. They had a lot of cool old furniture from the period, some it was the personal furniture of the original owners. I'm not a big Civil War buff, but this place was very interesting, and I would recommend it to others. Also check out the fine old homes going down main street heading toward downtown. I didn't realize this many old homes from the 1800's were in Danville. Check it out!
