This past Saturday my wife, eldest daughter and myself visited Cobbler Mountain for the first time. This was the first of three we would be visiting that day, and the only one I personally will not be returning to. They have mainly reds, which were good, but I'm not a reds fan. My wife and daughter though enjoyed them. They do have hard cider and that was excellent. I have never really tried hard cider before, but definitely loved two of there ciders, one with honey and the other with cinnamon. They both have such a pleasing taste. My wife and daughter enjoyed a half pint and pint of the honey cider, while I had a pint of the cinnamon. We took our drinks outside since seating inside is very limited. Nice seating arrangements outside, some with tables, some with fire pits. While sitting there enjoying our cider and talking, my daughter and I who are both smokers lit up. We each probably smoked several cigs while sitting there, only to be approached by a young man later who stated smoking is prohibited. They have a sign posted coming onto the property something about a smoke free area, I thought this only pertained to the drive thru the wooded area to the tasting room, after all this is Virginia, a tobacco state. Anyway, your property, your rules, no problem, but I enjoy a smoke with my beverage while OUTDOORS... so I won't be back, but should I see your cider in a store, I would gladly purchase it... but enjoy it at home.
To start with, our GPS could not find this address. Fortunately I was able to get directions from another winery and was able to find it. Glad we did. They have just built the tasting room building, and the owner has lots of ideas around fire pits and picnic tables and hiking trails up the mountain. This will really be a cool place for a relaxing picnic in the future. As it was, we liked their wines and the owner & family were very friendly.
We came here on Valentine's Day because we had a coupon from Living Social. This place is a little hard to find. It's at the end of a long winding road and you'll probably think you are lost but don't give up! You will find a great little winery if you keep going. We did a wine and hard cider tasting and had some VD treats. We used our coupon to buy an award winning bottle of wine and we thought that it was a good value overall. We are planning to return in the Spring or Fall!
Gorgeous vineyard and tasting room, though I found the wines to be just fair. The star of this winery is the selection of cysers that they are/have been developing. While they refer to these as hard ciders, they are fermented with mead, technically making them cysers. They had their strawberry for sampling at the time of our visit, with pumpkin, normal, cinnamon, and maybe one other option in the works. We were asked at the end of the tasting if we'd like to sample the pumpkin, and were led to the wine cellar where we got to meet the owner/winemaker. He is developing these cysers on draft, a purely brilliant strategy from a marketing perspective. Extremely friendly, he chatted with our group for a while, let us sample several wines in the works, and we departed quite happy. Definitely worth a visit to try the cysers - especially as they likely should be ready soon if not already!
The staff here was friendly and greeted us with a smile as we entered, which definitely makes one feel welcomed! The tasting was quickly started, but no mention of cost was provided at the start. We were a little surprised to see at the end that the tasting was $10 and didn't include glasses, when most places let you keep the glass for $7. (not that we need anymore glasses, we just didn't understand the reason for the expensive tasting otherwise)The wines they offered were nice. We selected their rosé, it was crisp and dry. Overall, we did enjoy their wines. We enjoyed sitting outside, under a pretty tree while enjoying the wine and viewing the surrounding hills and fields. They offer beautiful vistas!
Love all the wines so much i joined the wine club. Cindy is awesome and her knowledge of wine is impressive. The cider is a must try
We visited Cobbler Mountain Cellars in Delaplane, Virginia only a 25 minute drive from Warrenton. The winery is beautiful and set at the base of Cobbler Mountain. It is run by Jeff and Laura Louden, a couple who provides visitors with a very relaxing and warm reception. One can relax on the property while enjoying any number of wonderful wines or hard ciders. Visitors are treated like family and no one is rushed along but encouraged to take in the beauty that is Cobbler Mountain.I highly recommend visiting this winery.
We were bitten by the winery bug last year and after a trip to Napa and Sonoma consider ourselves amateur winery geeks. Cobbler Mountain is by far my favorite winery I've been too. It is such a warm and friendly place I would have though I was visiting with old friends. It's a great place to come with kids and families too. They have the neatest play space for the kids as we enjoyed tasting the wines and ciders. I would recommend for anyone to make a visit. You will not be disappointed. Ps. The Wine is Amazing too!
Cobbler Mountain is fast becoming my favorite VA winery. I have yet to find a wine they make that I do not like. In fact, their Cab Franc has become my go-to red when entertaining. They have just opened a beautiful new tasting room, and should have a new patio this Spring. The staff is super friendly and will gladly answer any question. Put this winery on your list of places to visit - you'll be glad you did.
We went to Cobbler Mountain Cellars the day after they opened their brand new building where they have events, wine tasting and where they store their barrels. They are just an hour from DC metro which is great location-wise but their ambiance transports you to the countryside very quickly. Good things about them:1. They are very friendly and make people who are not regular wine-tasters feel at ease2. Great space in the building and they have lots of space for picnics. We had a lunch picnic first before doing the wine-tasting.3. Very orderly wine-tasting process, you start from the loft and flow down to the 'cave' for their awarded bottles - they have a number of gold and silver awards.4. We got our tour through groupon and for $50, four of us went wine-tasting, cheese-tasting,a and we got fresh new wine glasses, 2 cheese bars, and $24 towards the purchase of their wines.5. They have excellent wines (taste is personal though so you may want to try them out.I'd go out their again maybe during the fall -when it will look very pretty.
Cobbler Mountain Cellars has quickly become one of our favorite places to go for great wine and a friendly atmosphere. The owners make everyone feel at home and the love of wine and their desire for all who visit to feel at home are evident the minute you walk in the door. Their new tasting facility opens next month.
I went out to Cobbler Mountain thanks to purchasing a living social deal. The deal wasn’t that great because the snack food included could've been better but it introduced me to a very pleasant, family-owned winery. EVERYONE in the family is working to make this place great which it will be one day. The tasting was lovely and the atmosphere was laid back and welcoming. The wines are little expensive but you get what you pay for, I imagine they don’t produce as much as other larger wineries so you pay for the exclusivity. I enjoyed most of the wines, white and red. This place is definitely on its way however I hope it never loses the charm that makes it special. I caveat this final statement with the fact that it’s been about a year since my last visit but the only facilities for customers back then were port-a-johns. Things may have changed since then but just a warning. This shouldn’t deter you from enjoying your visit!
My husband and I stopped by this winery after deciding it was time to try some new ones. A few reviews had piqued my interest so we headed out early on a Sunday. We had a great time! The drive to the winery was scenic and off the beaten path. When we arrived to the tasting room there were two other couples in the middle of a tasting. Based on the conversation you could tell they were regulars. We found a spot at the bar and began our tasting. We were quickly included in the conversation and it really enhanced the experience. I had read about the cider they had online and asked about it since it wasn't included in the tasting. They had a bottle chilled, and allowed my husband and I to try it - we loved it. My husband asked if he could buy a bottle and Laura said it wasn't released yet... but she grabbed a bottle out of the box reserved for restaurant distribution and it came home with us. To even better the experience we were offered a taste of the sparkling wine, which I am typically not a huge fan. But this was good. Very good. They even mixed a bit of the red with the sparkling for us and we gave that a whirl - fantastic! Needless to say, we loved the welcoming atmosphere here, and will definitely be back again... and again.
I visited Cobbler Mountain recently as we were celebrating a friends birthday. Eventhough we had not called ahead, Cobbler Mountain rolled out the red carpet. They were expecting a large group which had not arrived yet. Still they made room for us and even offered us a birthday toast of sparkling wine that was not a part of the regular wine tasting. They took their time with us and also allowed up to use their picnic table under a gazebo for our lunch after the tasting. They also had several good wines but what made our time there really special was their friendliness. I will definitely return.
This is a family owned and operated winery whose wines have won many awards and pride themselves as being ‘green.’ This is a must include Virginia wineries to visit and will not be disappointed. Easy directions to a turn off to a gravel road that leads you up the mountain side, through wooded trees, until you reach the open area at the hilltop with the vineyard. Keep your eyes open on the drive up and may see some wildlife such as a family of wild turkeys with their chicks scurrying off into the brush. We were greeted by ‘Corky’, one of two family dogs, who led us the way to the tasting room entrance located in the lower level of the owner’s home. We were the only ones there during our weekday visit, which allowed us to have Laura’s full attention who described an interesting history on the origin of the family winery and pointed out the counter was repurposed from the original family home.We originally had a voucher for a chocolate pairing and found out that it was part of their winter experience and was starting their summer pairings with local cheeses, but still got to experience a sampling of wine with chocolate truffles after finishing our flight. The winery doesn’t produce enough wine for commercial distribution, but can be purchased through the wine club, at the winery and enjoyed at many fine dining restaurants in the area, such a L’Auberge Chez Francois, The Red Fox Inn and many others. Three tasting flights are available, Spring 2013 New Releases, Bubbles & Port-Style, and Cellar Library. As we made our way through the Spring 2013 flight, we couldn’t decide which one we liked better as all were individually delightful on the palate. The rain kept us indoors and weren’t able to enjoy the outdoor seating area that on a nice day would be a perfect way to relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the view of the vineyard and the mountains. Get on their mailing list and will get notices of their forthcoming events to enjoy on a return visit.
