We went to Mt Vernon on the way out of DC - headed home. The place is absolutely fascinating. There is a remarkable amount of history there. I'm not sure I fully appreciated it when we were there. I'm reading "The Real George Washington" now and vividly remember so many of the features about Mt. Vernon. This should be a companion trip to a study of George Washington. You'll see history come alive.
There is so much to do here. It feels like you are stepping back in time when you come. The staff is nice and you can really tell what it was like to live in the Washington household.
This can't be missed if you are in the DC area. The house, grounds and outbuildings are so beautiful and well kept. The guides are very helpful and interesting. The education centre is one of the best "museums" I've seen at historical sites like this. The movie about the revolutionary war is really educational and entertaining with all of the extra, sensory experiences. The gardens and scenery must be stunning during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Beautiful location right on the Potomac River. I will come back next time I am nearby.
If in the Washington DC area, this is a great day trip and well worth the visit. The visitor centre is amazing, as are the tours of the Washington plantation and home. The view from the back porch is unforgettable. It is definitely a day trip though - don't try to see it in a few hours. We took the metro and a city bus from Washington DC - it was pretty easy to get to and took about 45 mins to an hour.
We chose a beautiful late winter day to travel the 15 miles out of town to Virginia. We are so glad we did, the house was striking for sure but what really stood out for us was how wonderfully positioned the estate is at the bend of the Potomac. The view from the back porch is greatly unspoiled and you feel as if you can experience for a moment the restorative peace that General Washington must have felt returning to this place. A must do for anyone staying more than a few days in the Washington, DC area.
Take a step back in time to when George Washington was president and learn about his childhood, see the home he lived in with his wife and children and learn about the grounds of Mount Vernon. The gardens are beautiful. Most of the exhibit is outside so dress comfortably.
What an incredible experience. The guides were well trained and knowledgeable. It was refreshing to be able to touch and feel items at a historical location. Very few areas were off limits. I advise that you get there early and plan a day of it. There is a lot of walking involved up and down hills. If it has been raining or snowing the areas to walk will be COMPLETELY muddy. I would recommend boots. Ladies no nice shoes or high heels they will be ruined. Thankfully I was wearing Sperries but still very slippery. Wheel chairs were getting bogged down. I would recommend making arrangements for a god cart to take anyone in a wheelchair to the main house. There are two films. One is way to long and takes up to much of your valuable time. The second one I highly recommend in the education center. It runs for 20 minutes and gasps seats that rumble, snow that falls on you and is on an IMAX type screen. IIn the same education area is a wonderful exhibit. So basically you tour the grounds, go into the main house, visit all out lying buildings, see a working farm, tour gardens and farms, visit the cemetery, and visit the education center. Just remember to pick up a audio tour. We didn't know about it until to late. You pick it up at the visitors center. Great overall experience.
My fiance and I dropped by here last month because my fiance has never visited before. We picked a really bad day to go though, because it was very cold and rainy (an icy kind of rain). Our visit was still nice, however. This was actually my second visit (last visit: December 2011) and the mansion and grounds were still very lovely. With your admission (which is a bit pricey), you can enter the grounds and walk around, take a look at the museum, visit the gift shop on the grounds, and get a tour of the mansion. Unfortunately, you cannot take any photographs inside the mansion, which is a shame. It's still nice to see anyway. You can even see the key to the Bastille in the mansion (an important icon from the French Revolution). The docents are very informative and friendly. Mount Vernon is a bit difficult to find, so make sure you have a GPS with you when you go there. Oh, and one other thing. The top floor is only open during a certain time of year (I got to see it last time I was there). It first opens 6 weeks after Thanksgiving and is open only for a limited time. So, if you visit, maybe it'd be good to go during the Holiday season.
We carried 2 busses of high school band members there and were not disappointed. I have been here before and am amazed at the place. The grounds are kept immaculate and the organization should be proud of the way they have preserved our first President's home. A truly great place to visit if anywhere close!
Mt. Vernon was and is a working farm, full of the General's innovations and inventions. The main house has supporting buildings including a kitchen, smokehouse, a pint mixing house, greenhouse and stables. Also there is an octagonal barn that was used for wheat threshing by running horses over the stalks of grain where the wheat berries fell to the floor below. See President Washington't enormous bed, he was 6'6", very tall for the age, his size 12 boots are downstairs in his study..
