The setting is nice for an in town location. I am not a wine expert by any means , but was not at all impressed. The wines were all on the sweet side with an odd smell. The places was very busy and tasting area was way too small.
When we arrived, a trolly full of people had just arrived. The staff worked quickly to accommodate the crowd and get everyone served. The tasting was done in a professional manner while still being friendly.
This was a decent winery on the Colonial Virginia Winery Tour. It probably had the least amount of character and had the sweetest wines on the tour. The tasting area was much smaller than the others, but overall it was a nice place. There was not much to see other than the tasting room. Most of the grapes are not grown there and is located on a road across from other businesses.
Visited this winery for the Fall Festival where there were 4 different wine producers giving samples of their products. It was a lovely afternoon, there were food trucks serving very impressive meals. Seating was either under cover or on picnic benches and there was live music playing. All the employees were friendly and helpful. I haven't visited on a regular day but I'm sure it would be a well spent time if you are a wine lover. It's always good to support local producers.
$5 will get you a tasting of 13 wines. The location is great, the tasting room quaint and the wine pretty good. I enjoyed your my time here. My favorites are the Gewurztraminer and Vidal Blanc.
Oh I questioned it with my California snobbery. I had tasted my way through Napa and Sonoma. I had discussed aging and wood flasks at the finest those areas had to offer. Now I know what I never expected. This James River Virginia Wine can compare with those West Coast products and actually surpass them in their own unique way. Add the charm of sitting under oaks and mimosas as old as the Civil War times and the pleasant central Virginia climate and you could make a movie about people taking a trek to this great destination. Of course the Southern Hospitality was the icing on the cake.
My husband and visited James River Cellars this past weekend. We tasted at the downstairs tasting counter and the space was a bit cramped because of a special music weekend they had going on. On the positive note, the personnel were very nice and knowledgeable about the wines. Always In search for a good Cab Sav, I found the 5 reds, 6 whites and 1 blush on the sweeter side, but all were enjoyable in their own right. The white Chardonel, a hybrid version of the Chardonnay and Vidal Blanc, was a fun taste especially in comparison to the Chardonnay, Reserve Chardonnay and Vidal Blanc. Wines had very reasonable prices. Tasting was $5 for the 12 wines that they had available.
We're terribly sorry you were disappointed with your visit to the winery last month, as we really strive to provide an exceptional experience for all of our guests. We've recently had some staff turnover so, while we try to provide comprehensive training for our new personnel -- including our policies and the importance of providing excellent customer service -- we'll review these topics with everyone to ensure we meet or exceed expectations. In the meantime, if you're willing to give us another try, we'd be happy to comp your tasting on a future visit to the winery.
Though the buildings and grounds were beautiful, we found the winery did not compare to many others we have visited across the country. The tasting was meager and felt rushed. The staff was not as welcoming as we have found elsewhere.
My sisters, mother, and nieces visited this winery on our way to Winchester Virginia for my daughter's college graduation. Since visited every winery in Virginia is on my daughters bucket list, and Winchester is surrounded by wineries we were excited to stop here because we had never been. The young man that waited on us was excellent. He laughed with us, he was very informative, and he was very patient as there was also another group there at the same time. We had seven in our group. The wines were great and most of us bought a bottle to take home. All of us purchased a glass to drink there and we headed out to the lawn to take in the beautiful weather. We had a great time and it was a wonderful stop that made a long ride not seem so long. Since my daughter was at college and not with us, we surely will be returning as I think she would love this place.
We go to Ashland, VA often to visit our son and his family and finally decided to visit the winery. We found some very good wines. It is in a beautiful setting of gardens and old large trees. We will definitely be going back.
Attended the April fools wine festival 4/5/14 @ James River Winery, had a great outing enjoying the wine tastings, vendors and enterainment. mark your calendar for upcoming outdoor events @ this Winery.
We stopped by while we were in Glenn Allen. The staff of this tiny winery are very friendly. I enjoyed the wine tasting and decided to take home a bottle of Chambourcin. The only complaint that I have is that the wine glasses do not come as souvenirs with the wine tasting. I'm not sure if they're available for purchase, I didn't ask. Overall I had a great time and can't wait to visit the winery in the spring and summer months.
I went to the vineyard with a couple of gal pals, and we were pleasantly surprised a festival was going on. Well organized, good food truck food and the facility was beautiful. The wines were great as well.
This is a great little winery. The staff is wonderful and wines are very good. I have never been treated better. After tasting be sure to stay around and enjoy a glass of wine in one of the outside or inside patio areas. The place is a very pleasant place to seat side as a couple and to enjoy a glass of wine.
