This winery has a quint, rustic feel. The main drawback I have with this winery is with the staff. Our server was reading the bottle label during the tasting. I have an expectation that winery staff will know their wines inside and out.
We visited during their South African Wine Festival and can offer the following comments. We have frequently enjoyed South African wines and enjoyed the opportunity to sample offerings from multiple producers. The folks are friendly and helpful. The crowd obviously enjoying themselves. The entertainment alone is worth the price of admission ($35). However, if you stay for the afternoon you will find it a bit repetitious. I also found the frequent reference by the entertainers to the multiracial composition of the crowd to be interesting. What did they expect? The food...The oysters on the half-shell were fresh and quite good although I missed my usual condiments. The South African sauces offered were tasty and interesting but just not as enjoyable. This is probably me.The sausage is quite good (Boerwhurst, I believe). The Peri Peri chicken bland and tasteless. The roast lamb extraordinary. The fish and chips were excellent. A large portion of quite tasty fish and had I not waited until most of the crowd had cleared would have likely enjoyed the chips more. Get 'em while they are hot!I regret having not visited the winery but looked for GrayHavens' under the central tent. Just wasn't thinking that they would only serve this in the winery tasting room and missed it altogether. In driving to the parking area you by-pass the tasting room and unless you know it is there you will miss it.Pretty sad looking vineyard.Note for future Festivals. Four Porto-Johns are totally inadequate for this event unless you are having them serviced daily. Disgusting.
This winery offers a tasting for $5. If you purchase a Heart of Virginia wine pass you can taste here as well as 5 other wineries for $20. The tasting consisted of 3-4 wines, a port and 2 sangrias. The pours were plentiful and the tasting room pleasant.
