Came out on Saturday night November 8th to see Big Hero 6. My family and I drove 1 1/2 hours to get to Goochland. It was a beautiful night though it was very chilly. John and his staff we absolutely wonderful and the concession staff was faced with a much larger crowd than they expected and yet they worked quickly to to take care of all customers and did so with smiles on their faces. Had to get my Gooch Dog finally (had 3 actually) and then got to sit back and watch a great movie. Really enjoy all the old commercials that John asy at the beginning of the night. A drive-in is the only way to enjoy a movie and Goochland does a great job of making it a memorable experience. Can't wait to go back again.
I really enjoyed the presentations and the concessions. They boys sat outside of the car in fold out cars and we kicked back inside of the car. Nothing compares! I reside in Chesterfield so it's a little drive but well worth it on occasion.
This was our 9th visit to the Drive-In. We arrived on time. Movie was due to start @7:30 - started closer to 8:00. We don't have small children, just a teen, so that really didn't set us back too much, but we do have an hour drive - so starting on time DOES come into play. The food was AWFUL! We eat here each and every time. The hamburger I got was cold and tasteless with ketchup and relish. 1/2 was eaten. Tots were cold. Hot dogs and corn dogs for the family were pitiful! None of us ate all of our meal. Snickers bar was totally frozen! I can see keeping them cool so they will not melt, but take a few out to thaw out before folks purchase them. Good way to break a tooth! We dined on popcorn and soft drinks! Since the food is reasonably priced we really didn't get too bent out of shape with that either. We're pretty easy going. What we DID get bent out of shape about is how close they jam the SUVs together AND how many rows there are for cars that are NEVER EVER filled up when we visit! Far more folks drive the larger trucks and SUVs these days - they need more room for these vehicles! There were two larger SUVs that were parked in a row behind us that had a couple of handicapped children. The staff made them both move next to us. I realize this is a parental issue, as well, but the mini van that pulled beside us had a handicapped child that flew out of the front seat and the car door almost plowed into our car door. Note, the "almost"! Well, the mother apologized and never thought any more of it because there were 3 to 4 other children running around that they were in charge of. The handicapped child was not being watched. Came back to the vehicle and FLUNG HER CAR DOOR OPEN and it SMASHED INTO OURS! The vehicles are so close together that there is not even enough room for ONE vehicle to safely open their doors without hitting another vehicle! Needless to say - at that point - we got a bit bent out of shape! We then had to move our vehicle, something we should not have had to do SINCE we arrived in plenty of time to pick out our parking space near the end of the row! MEANWHILE, those 2 lanes that were reserved for cards - NEVER GOT FILLED and set empty! Common sense has to prevail here. If the rows are not being filled up with cars ALLOW the smaller SUVs to use them! NO ONE ties their hatch down anymore! It used to be that EVERYONE was supposed to do that - now they "suggest" it and that's it!If this had been my first visit and I had to base a return visit from THIS visit! I would NEVER EVER return! As it is, it will have to be something I desperately want to see to return! $25.50 entrace + $20 food + an hours drive - gas ain't cheap! There's nothing there to convince me that their drive-in theater is better than a movie theater!
I had never been to a drive in. This has all the fun of something your parents (or grandparents- depending your age) may have done but with the up to date technology screen. It is a really great deal! You get two features for the price of one. However, you can leave after the first (same price regardless). Food prices are more than reasonable. They usually have some sort of entertainment going on. They had a dunking tank when we went. It is really a great family function. They keep the place up really clean and nice. Bring chairs to sit by by your vehicle or sit inside. Read their website for all the details.
Take a lawn chair and a blanket and sit back and enjoy the movies. Two are shown each evening. The playground is fun for kids before and in between events. Bathrooms are close by. You won't be disappointed.
We have been coming to this drive-in since the first night it opened in 2009. Each year John has grown in a positive way. John makes sure to walk around and welcome everyone that visits whether it's their first visit or they are regular customers. The food is extremely reasonable and in no way is another overpriced. Even the double feature is less than $10 per adult. In addition to spending some great quality time with your children, you are able to enjoy meeting those that you have never know, create new friendships and feel a real close sense of an old fashioned community.Even when the weather dips, John and his staff are working the movies each weekend until mid November. The staff is extremely welcoming and caring. You feel like you are part of the family when visiting the Goochland Drive In, a place that no one is a stranger!
This place is awesome. I old enough to remember the drive in in eastern henrico and this is so much better. Play area for kids and then another play area for older kids to just old kids, you know who I'm talking about. Reasonable snack shack pricing and good foods, they have a few picnic tables. If you go take comfortable chairs, if you have little kids throw blankets and pillow in back of SUV or truck for them to chill in. Bring a bungee if you have a SUV or they come around and will tie down your hatch with roof level to help all viewers. The picture clarity is GREAT! Enjoy with your Family, we have been probably 5 times with our kids and going again to see Fire rescue.
My husband says this is the best thing since sliced bread and biscuits. Lol. But honestly we really enjoy going here. The price can't be beat and neither can the food. Seriously, its delicious! Such a great family atmosphere but also a great place for a date! We love supporting a family owned small business instead of paying an arm and a leg for the big theater monopoly in charlottesville. This is well worth the drive. Definitely follow them on facebook to keep up with the coming attractions. #weGDIT
We absolutely LOVE going to Goochland Drive-In Theater. They have a great family atmosphere, show first run movies, and have a great snack bar. It is also very affordable. I would recommend that everyone try this at least once!
We spent almost every Friday night at GDIT watching a double feature from April 2011 to October 2013. It was such a great time for the entire family. Now that we have moved across the country, we really miss the drive in. John and his staff would go out of their way to make it a pleasant experience for all patrons. The drive in is best enjoyed when you arrive early and pick a good spot, get a bunch of yummy goodies to eat, and then walk around or play until dusk (bring your own games, walk your dog, or use the playground). Bring your chairs, blankets, pillows, battery-operated radio, and bug spray for a night under the stars. We would take a potty break and change our kids into their PJs during intermission, because they would always fall asleep during the second feature. Often there are special events such as wine tastings, costume contests, an ice cream truck, classic car shows, hayrides, and bonfires. I loved seeing the classic Christmas movies including the pre-movie bonfire and hayride with Santa. What a great place for a date night too!Tips for the snack bar- buy a large drink as refills are only $1. Make your own dipping sauce for the chicken nuggets out of equal parts mayo, ketchup, and relish using the little cups for the pretzel cheese and a straw to stir with. Save room for seconds, because often you can get buy one get one free sandwiches during intermission on slower nights. We can't wait to come by on our next visit to Virginia!
Absolutely love going to this drive-in. I grew up going to the drive-in and didn't realize they still existed until I discovered GDIT a couple of years ago. My 13 year old son loves it, esp. the Gooch dogs! Thank goodness that smokers have a designated section; if not, asthmatics and people like me who get migraines from cigarette smoke would not be able to enjoy the fun. Sounds like the snot who wrote that review needs to go back to their mansion and watch Redbox. Always friendly workers and polite people all around.
What an exciting outing for the whole family. This place is located in the midst of trees, just off I-64, about 25 minutes from Richmond/Midlothian/Glen Allen. They play the latest movies that are just out in regular theaters. Mostly the ones that can be watched with the whole family. It open up about 2 hours before the show starts so people start trickling in, picking up spots with the best views (there's no shortage of those), kids play in the nice moderate-sized play area or just in the lot with their siblings, friends and parents. Every day is a mini-festival. The movie itself starts just after dark and their projection is at par with any theater in town, if not bigger and better. Many a weekend, they have double specials where they show two films back to back with an intermission in-between. The food stall is at the back with lots of items to choose form. Prices are extremely reasonable (nothing over $3.50) and that's what they depend on for their income so I would encourage people to shop there to show their support. Plus, the kids love it too. A word of caution: even on what may be predicted as a warm evening, it can get a bit chilly and windy so bring your jackets or small blankets. Plan on staying till late. A mini-van, with the last row of seats removed and replaced by a mattress is the best way to go with little ones. If you're in the greater Richmond area and you haven't been to the Goochland Drive-in, you're missing out bit time.
Wondeeful family time. Great value for tickets and concessions. Will definatley go back next time we visit virginia.
To: the lady in Richmond, VA who wrote "not a family friendly night out" with the 1 star review. I was parked right next to you when you pulled in your Jeep and your Jeep sat more than 3 inches taller than my Chrysler minivan. You complained about my roof rack obstructing people's view (which by the way if it was I could have lowered it). I was offended by the way you talked to the gentleman that was working that evening and the language you used in front of not only my children but your own. He never "bullied" you, he simply asked you to move back a couple of spaces so others could see. By the way there is a huge hill toward the back you could have parked on and never had an obstructed view. You asked for a refund and he told you that they would be happy to give you one at the gate. To everyone looking for feedback, My family has been 4 times already this year and we ENJOY every second that we're there. The staff is so friendly and we have NEVER had a bad experience. My boys love the play ground and the concession stand has awesome food for great prices. We love it and will continue to go!!! We get there really early and play cards, Yahtzee, we've even brought our corn hole game and played a few rounds. AWESOME time is always had by my family!!! LOVE IT!!
This place is the best! We drive 45 minutes with our three kids to see movies here several times over the season. The staff is friendly and helpful, the place is clean, well-run, and has a GREAT family atmosphere. Food is good, and the prices are far better than at a "regular" theater. It costs less for our family of 5 (3 @ adult ticket, 2 at kid ticket) to go see two movies and get food and popcorn at the GDIT than it does for my husband and I to go to a regular theater for one movie. The playground is fantastic for the kids waiting for the movies to start, and all the staff is accommodating and helpful. I would recommend this place over a regular theater any time. It has been getting popular this summer, so go as close to the 'gates open' time as possible (usually 6pm) and have some dinner from the snack bar and bring something to do to keep you and the kids occupied while you wait. You won't regret it! This place is fantastic!!
