I brought my four year old son one morning and we both really enjoyed it! There's a lot to see and read. I would of loved to see a little more for children but my son did like the hats and jackets to dress up in!
such a wonderful place to stop in. everything is open and clear for viewing. Lots of the fire department history and a lot of antique equipment.
Very impressive collection of Harrisonburg fire history. The museum is built into the hallways of the fire department offices. The entire concept was very cool.
Wonderful history of our city. Not advertised much, this is a great place for adults and children. Added plus, great views of the city.
We've been twice, once as a couple, and then returning to take 6 grandchildren. Overwhelming tribute to those who fight fires, past (all volunteer!) and present (including NYPD, 9/11). The kids enjoyed the equipment they could touch and dress it, and the fire bell. We came away with profound admiration for those who protect us. By the way, it is on the second floor of the City Hall building.
We had an unscheduled stopover in Harrisonburg, Va and decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather to explore. What a wonderful surprise at the Public Safety Building on Main Street! This little museum is worth taking the time to see. We knew the display was focused on the local FD, so we didn't know what to expect in terms of depth/breadth of the exhibits. We were very pleasantly surprised. The exhibits were thoughtful and well displayed. The museum not only provides a deserving tribute to the profession overall, but is a wonderful way to preserve and recognize the local history. We spent about 20 minutes but certainly could have taken a little longer had we arrived earlier. The museum is located in the HFD offices on the third floor. You will need to stop at the desk in the lobby to get an access pass for the elevator.
we were directed here by the lovely people at the visitors centre, so glad to have had the experience, the museum is immaculate, the displays informative and done with all the pride that fire departments have. The staff were engaging and friendly and as the museum is actually in the fire department building its going on around you, make this a must see you wont be disappointed.... This museum is of the fire department's history in Harrisonburg. As visitors from out of state it was just as interesting as any fire museum near our home would be. It showed the different uniforms used, different fire equipment, radios and all things fire department. the kids can put on fire gear and take a picture. The museum is located in the public safety building so the city employees give you a quick orientation and you can go look around. Before you leave, the workers gave each child a bag with a fire hat, pencil, coloring book and other fire related activities and gave mom and dad a bag including a smoke detector battery among other things. It was a nice way to spend about an hour with kids.
