Foot stomping' Americana is alive and well at the Carter Fold! ...and has been for generations. Dancers from 7 to 97 clogged up a storm to the beat of genuine bluegrass music the night we visited. Next door the old general store has been converted to a museum filled with fascinating memorabilia about The Carter family and the beginnings of country and bluegrass music. It is a local gathering place that closes at 10 so that "everyone can get a good night's rest and get up in time for church on Sunday". This is a fun Saturday night.
We attended the 40th Carter Family Memorial Festival on 8/2/2014. Great event. The Music was excellent & we enjoyed the cloggers and country atmosphere. Tucked in the hills of beautiful Virginia. Beautiful drive out there and a really fun experience. The have concerts every Saturday night & those shows are also excellent. We have attended those in the past also.
Went to watch the performance of The Fiddlin Carson Peters Band. Great place with lots of history. Best money I have ever spent on a concert. I plan to keep an eye on their schedule and hope to catch many more concerts there.
The music is great, the food is great and at a low cost. Enjoy! The performers are very good and the folks that volunteer to help out are extremely friendly. You can learn about the history of the Carter Family (if you don't already know it). You can also dance for two solid hours! It's location is a bit hard to get to. Don't expect McD's; this is out of the way, but very natural for this event. The location can seat about 1,000 and had about 500 when we visited. Thoroughly enjoyable.
This is a non-profit with a mission to preserve & present country music in a way that also the early pioneers of this type of music particularly the Carter. Not to be missed are the Carter homestead and the old Carter store now a museum. The music center will hold 8-900 people with comfortable and gradually elevated seating. Very good sound system. Different entertainers weekly. Every thing will put a smile on your face. Do not miss this piece of our heritage.
We took our grand-daughters ages 8 and 10 to Carter Fold on the 5th of July 2014. They both loved all the music and dancing. We made a 10 hour trip from MS for their first visit to VA and the Carter Fold. They wanted to know when they could come back and could they get clogging shoes before the next trip. It is so wonderful to have a place that offers such good clean family fun that can be enjoyed by all ages. We certainly encourage everyone to visit and to be there early to get a good seat.
The Carter Fold is a true slice of Americana. Come early to check A&P's general store (now a museum) and cabin. The music and atmosphere are top notch. A must do if anywhere near the area.
This is a regional treasure! Good country and bluegrass live music every Saturday night. Arrive early for a good seat. Plan on staying to the end (about 3 hours.) love it.
It doesn't get any better that this! Oldtime or Bluegrass bands every Saturday night. Friendly atmosphere. No alcohol on premises. Concession stand has great food reasonably priced.
My wife and I attended a bluegrass festival held here and we were blown away. It's obvious that great care and planning were taken when setting this place up. Comfortable seating and top notch acoustics add to the rich musical experience. Everyone there is helpful and very friendly. If you enjoy bluegass or country music, this place is a must see.
At the corner of AP Carter Memorial Highway and Wildwood Flower Private Drive sits the Mecca of American Country and Folk Music. This is indeed the town where the legendary Carter Family resided, and their spirit still lives on every Saturday night with mountain music concerts - in fact the 3rd generation of Carters are running it now.Shows begin at 7:30, and when the "flat-foot" music kicks in the dancing starts up immediately afterwards. We saw everyone from kids to college students to senior citizens. Some were doing the "I've never really danced before" shuffle, some were getting in a circle, some were busting some mountain moves that must have taken years to master, and one elderly guy just put a bottle of water on his head and skedaddled around. The fiddle-led band was going to town on music that sounded like the Harry Smith box in the modern age, but despite the amplification the clogs on the floor were providing heavy percussion. It was that kind of place (though there's ample room for seating so you can let others cut the rug for you).Admission is typically $8 for adults and $1 for kids aged 6+, but you'll also want to bring extra cash because the Carter Family Museum & AP Carter's childhood cabin are each $5 suggested donation. Also there are souvenirs (CDs and t-shirts) and food (hot dogs, nachos, popcorn and ice cream). No credit cards taken. We stayed in Kingsport TN and drove over, which was about 20 minutes' worth of pretty driving scenery.A pretty magical place, one for the ages.
You get there and it a different place they had blue grass music but the fun was watching people dancing. We thought we were going for a concert but it was more like a satruday night band playing at a local watering hole atmisphere.
Old time music and dancing. The ancestral stomping ground of the world famous Carter family. Music every weekend in the traditional style with flat-foot dancing. The staff is friendly and all their concessions are not only affordable, but homemade.
If only, we could come here every week, like most of the folks who come here do - we would, if only we lived here - we would, but we live in England and have only managed to visit 3 times in 10 years. Over that time the venue has changed, only slightly and for the better, but the people are the same, the music is the same, & the dancing is the same, all wonderful and not to be missed, the best $8 you will ever spend in the whole of the USA, and we know because we have been to a great part of it ( 46 States). To see children from as young as 3/4 to old timers with their walking sticks, on the floor dancing and thoroughly enjoying the music which is part of their lives is a thrill not to be missed. Whether or not you ar a real old time music fan you can not but have the best time here... do go if you can, you will not be disappointed and will have a memory to last a lifetime.
Want to experience some old time country, bluegrass or folk music? Want to experience it the way it has been experienced for decades, if not centuries? Want to get to the bare bone of country and folk, without all the music industry's influences? You came to the right place!!Okay, you walk in and you see rows of chairs going up to the roof. Not the setting I expected at first when going here. I has music halls in mind, standing in front of a band performing. No, it's old school, as if you're on the benches of a high-school basketball game. And when there is a song people like, they get up, walk down and dance in front of the band, enjoying themselves. You can clap along, drink a root beer, watching the dancing couples, or join in yourself. I'm looking forward to my next visit! Take the family along!! It's a real family place.
