Very basic ski area with uncomfortable lodge. Ski instructors were very friendly and great with my kids.
It was 9-3 with lunch, tix, and rental included. A fabulous deal for the $ and instructors were very kind and helpful. My children left asking if they could ski more days.
The tubing is reasonably priced by the hour. The young men that were running the tubing enjoyed their job and were so friendly. The scenery is breathtaking. They have a conveyor system that takes you up the hill on your tube. We came here while we were staying at the Homestead and it just added to an already wonderful visit.
I skied only once before, and that was about 30 years ago. Visited Homestead Ski Area in Hot Springs, VA... and took a 2 hour ski group lesson. Instructor, Hella, was great... Online, resort advertised $79 special (normal ~$150) for brief introductory group lesson, rental, lift ticket. But their system wouldn't allow online booking for the date/time we requested. We called to make reservations - done. Got there, and not only did they not have reservations (but luckily space), but charged us full price and indicated other price was online special only. All staff was really friendly. Instructor couldn't have been better. Equipment seemed good quality and facility seemed perfect size for beginner.
Great place to learn or have a fun afternoon. Basically one big slope but a fun place to enjoy yourself or even better to get the basics down.
Great family ski mountain. Slopes are low intermediate at best. If your kids are learning to ski/snowboard this is your mountain. Bunny school was organized, but doesn't offer snowboarding group lessons/bunny school. Instructors were very nice and helpful. Private snowboard lesson was well worth it, my son really excelled after his lesson with Brey. Nice deck to watch kids go up and down the slope. Lodge was clean enough and warm. Only disappointment was when they closed too early, they were closed/cleaning up by 3. Overall, it was a nice experience.
Not for those looking for a ski challenge - but for teaching little ones to ski - Perfect! Close to the Homestead resort - food and beverage (and bar) options on site. A deck with view of the slope to watch the kids come down the hill. Great fireplace on the deck to roast marshmallows. Rustic but fits the bill nicely.
Bathroom discusting, ski rental girls not helpful or welcoming, cafeteria closed at 3pm even though over 50 skiers/snowboarders were out on the patio or at bar. Only one ski lift and one slope to ski down. All around, too expensive for the quality of ski resort.
Loved everything about the Ski Area!! The folks were wonderful. This was the first time for the kids skiing and after only one lesson they were skiing run after run. No real line, easy to keep track of children that out ski you and the lodge is cozy.
On arrival, tea on the veranda even though we were not guests of the hotel. Very nice staff. We got a ride to the shooting range (free) just to see the view. This was exceptional, they knew we were not staying at the resort. The pool area (3 of them!) were great, whirlpool w/ warm spring waters. Restaurant was very fine. Too bad we cannot afford to stay here, perhaps in another lifetime, but come visit!!
I learned to ski here when I was 5 years old. These are slopes for the true beginner. They are small, short, and not very steep. Don't expect an intermediate/advanced skier/boarder to be able to spend all day here. However, if you've never skied etc...take a trip, ski some, sit by the fire and drink hot chocolate some!
Tried snowboarding for the first time and had a great instructor - we were fortunate to get some fresh snow in mid-March (which made the falls much softer). Free shuttle from the hotel was very convenient.
The ski area got a three star because it is slightly limited as far as trails go, but it is great for a day and for beginners. The staff is amazing, and my son had a private lesson that he really enjoyed. The only problem was the food was not very high quality. Junk food, basically. Healthy options would be appreciated. Restaurant staff was great. They helped my husband find my son's retainer in the garbage and sterilized it for us when they found it. Yuck, I know. Anyways, the staff is great.
Our two boys never put on a pair of skis before. By the end of the 3 hour session, our oldest was riding the lift and taking the hill with me! The slopes are great for beginners. Intermediate and advanced skiers won't be challenged, but it's not busy and you can still have fun there.
Let's be honest. No one in their right mind is selecting The Homestead for a ski vacation. But that doesn't undermine the importance of the skiing experience to guests. The slope is small and the lift is slow. But, other than that, it is a wonderful small, rarely crowded place for kids to learn to ski and families to ski together. You can make it from top to bottom in under 2 minutes, but it is fun and can easily be handled by all the family members. Learning how to ski is great, as the instructors are far and above better than the slope would indicate. Every year we get our kids some refresher lessons, and they are always showing marked improvement.
