I stopped here after leaving Lexington and sampled a couple beers and took a growler with me for later. It was all very excellent beer and Thomas Jefferson did say that transiting the local mountains was like "crossing the devil's backbone. Hence the name of the brewery. It is located at the base of a ski mountain but the area looked like it was very popular year round. I saw at least four wineries and one ciders nearby. Go there just for the drive from Lexington.
We stopped by mid afternoon on a perfectly warm and Sunny Sunday after an enjoyable drive from Roanoke; this was our destination stop. We preceded the drive with a visit to the Devils Backbone website to learn the location, read about their beers, and review their menu. Maybe we did not look close enough at that website, because once we arrived a friendly bartender informed us that they sold no food. Food is only served at their Roseland location, he explained. Seeing the surprise and disappointment on our faces, he remarked that their website might be a bit confusing. He also remarked that "quite a number" of people showed up with the false expectation of have having food with their beer. Indeed, during the brief five minutes we were there, we saw others arrive and depart once they learned their was no food. We departed too.
If you are ever in the Lexington, Virginia area and like craft beers give the Devil's Backbone a try. The beers are great and the service is too. Hopefully they will begin distribution in central NC soon.No restaurant on site but you can "order in".
Great selection of craft brews, superior decor,( if you like game mounts), we do. Fun staff, we were there for Halloween and they were in costumes. Was an hour from where we stayed but went back next day.
Solid service, great food, good times, cold tasty beers! Ordered the wings and devil backbone salad, both were very good and reasonably priced.
We were visiting friends who visit this place all the time. They have won the Great American Beer Festival Small Brewpub for 2012 and 2013. I enjoyed the smooth beer flavor of Gold Leaf and the view at the outdoor patio of the mountains is nice for a Florida girl!
Just stopped on the of chance and we were pleasantly surprised, Nice food, Good beer and all at a reasonable price.
