A little state run park, tells of a minor engagement between Federal troops trying to cross the river being thoroughly trounced by the rebels in a few plaques. Not much to see.
It was a nice hike to visit with the kids and dog.....the memorial was beautiful resting on the Potomac River, Be sure to wear lots of bug spray and check the kids and pets for ticks as you are trapsing through the woods...well worth a visit and its free!
The Battle of Ball's Bluff is less well-known than most civil war battles, but it was an important one. Since our neighborhood is on the battlefield, we like to go over to the park for an easy "hike" with our young kids. Great view of the river and some interesting history. Love it on a Fall day.
Pleasant walk with nice info signs around the battlefield site. The cemetery is interesting - had never heard of the battle, but there are hundreds like this. Preserved right next to suburban neighborhood. Good battle notes along the trails.
The battlefield is very different from what it looked like in the 1860's. It is now a forest in the middle of suburban developments. Back then it was farmer's fields outside a small town. If you are a civil war buff or just want a nice walk in the woods, it is worth seeing.
In the northeast part of Leesburg, Ball's Bluff has six interconnected trails as well as access to the Potomac Heritage Trail along the Potomac. The trails are nicely constructed and maintained so walking is enjoyable. However, the intersection with history here brings a new perspective to a hiker. This is home to one of the first skirmishes in the Civil War with Union troops crossing the Potomac, encountering the Virginia Regiment and being beaten solidly. An interpretive trail winds through the battle field, intersects with a cemetery, borders some cannon and leads to an overlook on the Potomac. The narrative account of the battle as well as the summary of those killed, injured and taken prisoner is comprehensive but also sobering. An interesting and important place to visit in Leesburg.
This is a go to place for us for walking our pups and letting them get a swim in. A good hike, in the shade, clean, well kept and full of History to read. Moderate: Spray for ticks both on yourself and your pets.
great war time history. great for a day hike as the area is in the woods and perfect for a fall time get away with the leaves changing color. would recommend coming out here if you are close by.
Very nice little battle field. Nice "cannons". Easy to get to and a very nice walk. We did this battle field on a day it was 90 and most of the walk is in the shade. An interesting perspective of this battle when you walk down to the river and see what the Union army had to do. If you are in the area and have time it is a very enjoyable place.
What a hidden treasure. Nestled in the midst of a housing development this park offers a small history lesson and lots of hiking trails. The trails are rustic and in some places rough going, but a wonderful place to visit and the scenery by the river is awesome!
A very well hidden battlefield but once you get thereby will be blown away. The park service is slowly restoring the area back to 1861 conditions but the living tour on the weekends is a good draw. The reenactors are very knowledgeable and seem to really enjoy sharing information. A very nice afternoon trip.
This small regional park in Leesburg is the site of a Cival War scirmish. The park is excellently maintained and has several miles of hiking trails suitable for all ages including a walk along the Potomac and a couple of small cascading tributaries. The main battlefield has signs throughout describing the battle in detail. It is very infomative. It also has several cannons- big with the kids- and a cemetary. This is a great learn as you hike park.
If you are a history buff and near Leesburg take some time to walk this famous historic site of one of the first but overlooked Civil War engagements. The outcome served as one of the many lessons for the inexperienced Union during the first half of the war. President Lincoln not only lost one of his best friends here but perhaps some of the public confidence. Lt. Oliver Wendell Holmes received two wounds here. The site is located off of SR 7 a short distance north of Leesburg. Follow the brown historic signs that take you through a subdivision.
I grew up in Leesburg and this was a place that we all loved. I'm so happy that it is still so tranquil and beautiful. If you bar the sounds of others around you, you can almost see the Civil War fighting still going on. A must if you're visiting Loudoun County.
This marks the site of a notable civil war battle with many casualties as troops were trapped crossing the river. It is a pleasant walk, but not much of an outing unless you have done some reading beforehand. There were no forts or other facilities here, so there isn't much to see.
